Under 20 lbs at 15 months

DS has his 15 month appointment on Monday and I know he's not 20 lbs yet--he's 19 lbs something ounces.

Am I alone?

My cousin's 4 month old weights one lb less then my DS. I always worry about his weight and try and try to feed him more but he doesn't gain weight.

Re: Under 20 lbs at 15 months

  • DS is on the smaller side too...he just takes after his dad, tall & thin.  He eats pretty well but just doesn't gain a lot of weight.  He's about 25% for weight and 70% for height!  He has VERY little baby fat now.

However...as long as he's healthy...it might just be his body type.  There's nothing wrong with that.

  • My DD is 19lbs at 19 months.  She was 17lbs at 15 months.  She's never even hit the 1st percentile for weight.  She eats great & is very healthy, but being tiny just runs in my family.  I've never worried about it.

Is your DS a good eater?

  • My DD was 20lbs 8 oz at her 15 month appt and her pedi wasn't concerned at all so I would try not to worry about it.  If your pedi doesn't seem to be worried, I would try not to as hard as that can be.  I have always worried about her weight but she eats well and continues to grow at each appt.  She is just very, very active when she's awake so she burns a lot of her calories.  We got back at the end of October for her 18 month appt and I'm thinking she's just over 21 lbs now so we'll see how it goes.  Try not to stress and if it makes you feel better, ask your pedi for their opinion.
  • DD won't be either. She was 17 something when I weighed her the other day. The ped said he was just going to monitor her weight to make sure she doesn't fall off the chart too much. DH and I are both pretty petite, so I'm not super concerned. You could always request a referral for a nutritionist.

  • My DD was 18 lbs 1 oz at her 15 month appt.  Pedi was not at all concerned because she is still following the growth curve, just always consistently in the 1st percentile for weight.  DD is just tiny and our pedi understands that. I always worry but at every appt, she continues to grow.

Our pedi said we only needed to be concerned if she fell off the growth curve. Her head and length are in the 30th percentile at 15 months.  Ask you pedi, they will let you know what they think :)

  • LO might (barely) be 20 lbs now but he certainly wasn't at his 15 month appt. We've been conerned about his weight but that was before he was 15 months. The doc was really excited that he was 18 lbs. I wouldn't stress it much. Some kiddos are just little.
  • DS was 2 percentile for weight at 12 months. I got him to gain a pound in 6 weeks but don't think he's gained much since. He isn't the greatest eater either. It takes us about 45 minutes to feed him a meal and we have to resort to putting the TV on or my iphone on to get him to open his mouth and eat. He'll eat anything if Yo Gabba Gabba is on. I hate having him watch TV but thats the only way he'll eat. I'll talk to the pedi on Monday about seeing a nutritionist.
  • DD hasn't been weighed recently, but she's probably just about 20 lbs now. Don't worry as long as your LO is healthy, active, and learning. People come in all different sizes - and children have very different growth curves.

LOL, my friend's 4-mo old is the same weight as my DD. It's funny having two kids on opposite ends of the spectrum!

  • another peanut here! LO went for her 15 mo appt last week and was 17lb 14oz 29"

She's always been in the 5% and her pedi isn't worry nor am I. She's active, healthy and eats just fine. I keep telling her she'll love it if she keeps this figure! I actually like having a peanut...makes it easier to lug her around!

  • My girls were 19 and 21 pounds at 15 months. They are happy, healthy, growing and meeting all milestones. My DH and I are long and lean and expect they'll probably always be the same way.

  • DS1 was 19lbs at his 1 year check.  He was 7lbs, 3 oz at birth & has always been small...even now at 15 years, but it runs in my family.  My dad is 5'7" & my mom is the same as me- 5'3" my DH is 6'1").  Our 2 DDs were 21 lbs at 1 year & DS2 was 26.5lbs, but he was 9lbs, 9oz at birth, so he has always been big.  I just really depends on the child.  As long as your child is healthy, that's all that matters.  Try not to compare to others...

  • DD was 19 lbs and change at 15 months. She might get to 21 by 18 months... Less than one month away, but I doubt it. I put a 12 month size denim skirt on her for wishful thinking today and it fell right off her. So she is rocking a 6-9 month skirt at 17 months! As long as they eat well, I generally don't worry too much.
  • My 20 month old is just 20lb. She is healthy, she's just a very active little girl. She goes nonstop all day. She's always been a peanut.

  • We're not there yet, but he was 17 1/2 at 12 months, so he would have to gain 2 1/2 lbs in 3 months at his busiest period to hit 20, and I doubt that will happen with him running circles every second he's awake.

Our pedi wants us to keep working on fattening him up in addition to giving him plenty of fruits and veggies (it's a balance) but did not schedule any extra appts or feel the need for us to see a specialist.

We feel that he's healthy and just small. He did triple his birth weight.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • My DD was 15 lbs at her 15 month appt :) DS was also pretty tiny at that age. They're both just small kids.
