DH and I need a new camera. We don't want to spend more than $300 or so on it. We are looking for something that does still as well as video fairly well. Consumer reports has good things about the Cannon Powershot, but it seems so small. Anyone have this one? If so, how do you feel about the size. Any other suggestions? THANKS!

Re: Please suggest your camera.
We have a Powershot (a few years old now) and love it. But, we don't do video on it, so I can't really speak to that. My favorite feature is that the battery lasts forever on it. I also like that it's small, but again, we use it for stills only and aren't exactly trying to do professional photography with it.
It's a great everyday moments kind of camera.
I have a Canon PowerShot SD880IS (I think the newest generation of that is the S90 and S95). The main, new advantages of the s90/95 are the updated sensors, the f2.0 lens, which gives you a full additional stop in light, compared to the f2.8 on the SD880. Plus, the s90/s95 have the manual control rings, which essentially allow you to control them effectively in manual mode kind of like an SLR.
My Powershot is about my third that I've had since 2003. I've had several of the A series as well. My favorite A series (so-called because they use AA batteries instead of a plug in rechargeable) took some of the most beautiful outdoor pictures I've ever seen -- sucked inside, though. The downside of all compact digitals is low light shooting, which is pretty common when shooting babies!
I've found that my Powershot SD880 is not great at fast shots even when on the "kids/pet" mode. I miss a lot of shots of my dog while it decides to take the shot. I don't know how you solve that with a compact, though -- you really need an SLR to take fast shots. I had a Fujifilm Finepix that took excellent low light and fast photos, but the downside to it was that it died on me after a year of medium-hard use. Maybe it was just my camera, though. Still, in general, I preferred overall quality of the Canons to the Fujifilm despite it's comparative excellence in low light/speed modes.
The Powershot also does movies, though for uploading purposes... I like my Flip. Honestly -- do NOT buy a camcorder. My friends spent $500 on some Sony camcorder when they had their baby and their videos are nowhere near as nice -- in sound or picture quality -- as the ones on my flip, which was $149 for the HD version.
https://kenrockwell.com has some excellent recommendations in all manner of price ranges. I recommend you get a canon powershot series for around $150-200, and then a Flip for video.
