How many of you are you eating lunch meat?

I am craving an italian sub... particularly some salami (which I have not eaten in probably years).  What is your take on the whole lunch meat issue while pregnant.  Are you heating up your lunch meat or taking a chance.

  • I heat mine up.  I know I'm paranoid, but that's me.

  • lunch meat never sounds good and it especially doesn't sound good now.  but italian subs are one thing that has sounded good.  but i always get mine heated and never think twice.

  • I'm eating it, but in moderation. We have a sub shop by our house that steams the meat prior to making the sub, so that has been great. Otherwise, it's usually sandmwiches that I have made. My OB did not seem too concerned about, but again his mesage was "just in moderation". Enjoy your italian sub my dear :)

  • I do eat lunch meat, but I am heating it up. Just a personal comfort level thing.
  • I think I've had it twice since getting my BFP. For a while, I wasn't eating any meat at all.

Both times I had it, it was on a toasted/heated sandwich.

  • I hate lunch meat (I think it's slimy), but I had a terrible craving for hoagies during my last pregnancy.  I ate so many of them and the only side-effect was WAY too much weight gain.  I really hope I don't crave them this time.

    I never heated the meat.

  • My OBs said lunch meat is fine.  I haven't had it since my BFP now that I think about it, but will.

  • I always heat it before I eat it.  BUT I always have - I do not like cold meat.  And melted cheese always tastes better than cold hard cheese.

  • I am eating an italian sub right now. Not heated or anything. I checked with the sub shop and everything is already fully- cooked.
  • Too Funny!!  I have never been a huge fan of deli meats, but I CANNOT GET ENOUGH of my deli salami!!!   I figure since I haven't had the stomach for meat lately, this is my best option for getting some much needed protein...but I don't heat it up...
  • I have eaten it with all my pregnancies and not heated it up.  I don't eat it in great quantities though, since it is not my 1st choice.  Sometimes, a roast beef sandwich just sounds perfect :-)

  • I eat it if it is toasted or has been heated.  Paranoid, I know, but I actually personally know one of the rare people who has had problems with a pregnancy due to listeria poisoning.  So, I'm paranoid.

  • I do when I crave it, which isn't that much. I usually nuke the heck out of it, but a few times I have not.
  • Yep! I had one yesterday and did not heat it up. I ate Deli meat the whole time with my DD and she is 3 and perfectly healthy.

  • I have it occasionally, and make sure it's heated up. Though neither of my losses have been related to listeria, I'm not at a point to be taking any risks.

  • I eat it and only heat it up when I would normally eat the sandwich toasted.
  • I've only had one sandwich, and got it toasted. I figure that counts as "heated".

I don't really like sandwich meat, and listeria is much more serious than many of the other "forbidden food" risks, like soft eggs, sushi, rare meat, etc. I think people ignore this one because it's inconvenient, not because of any actual risk analysis.

  • I'm not NOT eating lunch meat. I just don't really come across it much in my daily life.  If I had a craving for it, I'd probably indulge. But I haven't yet.

  • I just had an italian sub for lunch. I asked the place to heat it for 30 seconds for peace of mind. Go for it :)

  • I have had it once, from a very reputable place.  I haven't really wanted it so it hasn't been a problem for me.

There was some packaged lunch meat recalled recently for Listeria contamination, so it does happen.

yeah, i love the :in moderation: comments because 1 time eating the listeria infected meat is all that is needed.  it's not like over eating the meat is the problem

  • I haven't yet, but I don't like lunch meat all that much and I'm having a hard time even eating meat at all. For me, I likely won't eat lunch meat because I'll spend a week worrying about it and since I don't like it much anyway, it's not worth it. But who knows what I'll be craving in a month.

  • I have been eating it four to five days a week without heating it up for lunch because sandwiches are easier to carry during my morning commute. The thought of heating lunchmeat is gross to me. I get my meat from a reputable deli counter instead of eating the prepackaged stuff.

  • I did with my first and will with my second, but I am careful about what i eat.   I get stuff from places I trust and will not eat anything that could have been laying out.

  • I had lunch meat at least once a week through my whole pregnancy. Most of the time it was cold. As long as you're getting it from a clean place with decent turnover (think Subway, lots of customers = fresher stuff ) you should be fine. My DD was born perfectly healthy.

  • i'm not big on lunch meat, but if i were going to eat it, i would be the one that definitely heats it up. probably almost to burnt. :-) but i'm just paranoid and will be the type that follows every single do and don't that i am given.

  • I've not had it cold at all this pregnancy.  I've had it once or twice heated to steaming.

If I really really wanted some lunch meat, I think I'd go buy the nitrite/nitrate-free low sodium natural lunch meat at the store and make my own sub.

Ditto. Gotta love the quality of advice here on 1st tri! It's a rare day where I don't see a post that makes absolutely no sense. 'In moderation?' Good grief.

  • I eat deli meat when I feel like it, and I also drink a single cup of coffee if I feel like it, plan to get my hair done, and paint my nails...

And my doctor said all of those things are totally okay.

I won't tell you to do or not do anything, you have to decide if YOU are comfortable with it.  I only eat Boar's Head meat, but honestly not because of fear of Listeria, because I personally dont like cheap deli meats.

Also - for the record - eggs and cheese in the United States are 100% PASTEURIZED.  You can eat soft cheeses and eggs in any capacity.  If you are planning a trip to Europe where they dont pasteurize their cheese (although what the export to us IS-and for the record, unpasteurized cheese tastes better) then you can skip the fetas and gorgonzolas of the world.

i just wanted to share one of my favorite snacks with you! i love salami too i like a slice of salami with some ricotta on it i know it sounds weird everyone alwatys looks at me with 2 heads untill they try it~

  • I eat it more often than I should. I try to stay away from it, but I get terrible cravings for subs (or hoagies) and it's the only thing I want. So I give in.
  • I <3 lunchmeat!   (We call them hoagies where I'm from.)

Sometimes I think the banned/eat with caution foods, like this one, are a little much.   I get the whole staying away from raw fish and caffeine overload thing, but come on, now...  I bet our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers enjoyed a nice sandwich now and again when they were pregnant--and we all turned out just fine.

So, to answer your question, I do eat lunchmeat and I don't heat it up or steam it or boil it or whatever they say to do with it.   And, Italian hoagies rock!  Smile
