Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Curious - What age to start crying it out?

Just wondering what age you will be letting your LO cry it out?

For how long will you let lo cry before you calm them down?

Re: Curious - What age to start crying it out?

  • I don't have the strength to do this.  It breaks my heart to hear my LO cry.  Especially since there is no in between cry for her.  She goes from 0-60 with her happy to mad!

  • I think most people on here would think that at no age should it be done.  However, I do think it's acceptable to let a baby who has woken up in the middle of the night that had been STTN for a while to see if he/she will go back to sleep on their own within a few minutes and isn't fully crying.  I can tell when my baby is still asleep but cranking a little bit.  I can tell if he's hungry and if he was I would feed him.  My son has been STTN since 6 weeks.  Just the last few days, he's been sort of crying a bit due to teething probably.  He put himself back to sleep the first night, but last night he had rolled onto his tummy and wasn't happy.  I went in and rolled him back over and he fell back to sleep.  I couldn't ever let my baby get worked up and exhaust himself to sleep.

  • I'm reading the Dr. Ferber book right now.  Once I finish we will be Ferberizing LO.  I expect he will be about 6.5 months.  We will follow the schedule in his book, I think its 3, 5, 7, 10 the first night.  I may cut a minute out of each because I HATE hearing him cry.

  • I would not do any version of CIO prior to 6 months of age.  I think DS1 was about 6 or 7 months old when we started letting him fuss for a few minutes before rushing in and gradually increased the time between going in, if needed, to soothe.  That's not really CIO I know, but probably more of a Ferber type thing.  To be honest, I didn't read any books or anything - I called my friends who were moms and got their advice.  I've been truly blessed with 2 good sleepers.

  • No CIO here and never will; but I read it somewhere its most effective when its done between the age of 4-9months.
