1st Trimester

Blood work came back

I just got a call from my doctor's office.  I was scared sh!tless but she quickly said that there was no emergency.  (whew!)  Apparently my thyroid levels are low though.  She asked me if I was on thyroid medication or if I have been experiencing any low thyroid symptoms, which I haven't.  I did tell her that in my family my mother & her sisters all are on synthroid.  They are going to retest for that again on my 2nd appointment since they also said it could just be my pregnancy hormones throwing it off.

Anyone else experience that?

  • yeah, everything came back OK so I am not too worried.  But I wonder if my low thyroid levels are directly related to my pregnancy or if it is an underlying problem that hadn't been detected yet.

  • I m/c'd in June 2010 and in my follow-up appt in July, my OB tested my thyroid.  I am hypothyroid and have recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyoiditis - my body creates antibodies which attack the thyroid.

I am under a care of doctors now, including an Endocrinologist and am on a pretty high dose of meds to get me into a normal thyroid range. My Endo said that the antibodies can cause m/c and infertility so I am being monitored very closely now that I am pregnant.

    Good luck!

  • For my first pregnancy I got the same information- that my thyroid level was low.  By the time they did the second test a few weeks later, everything was back to normal.  Pregnancy can do weird things to your body!  So, it could go either way.  I wouldn't worry too much until you get tested again. And then I'm sure the doctor will be on top of it.

  • Most of the women in my family also have hypothyroid.... and most of the issues started during or after pregnancy.  Not sure the reason but I'm keeping an eye on mine these days too......
