I went in for my NT scan today - MH couldn't go because he's out of town for work and my office only does NT scans on Thursday afternoons. So I was already worried and all worked up, being alone.
The baby looked adorable - but he or she would NOT turn in the proper direction for the measurements. I tried hopping up and down, jiggling my belly, etc. The technician finally gave up and said "about half the time" you can't get measurements. Really? I haven't seen "about half" of the ladies on here post that they couldn't get any NT measurements. Or am I missing something?
We're going to try again next week. Which is good and bad. Good, because I get to see the baby again. Bad, because now I have another week to stress and worry about he or she getting good results.
Anyone else not get the necessary NT measurements? Are you going to try again, or let it go?
Re: No NT Measurements "About Half the Time"?
I know my baby wasn't the most cooperative and getting him/her to get into the right position so for the tech getting a pic of the face wasn't easy. My left ovary also seemed to be playing hide and seek so there was a lot of searching and checking back and forth. Did they do both an internal and external u/s? I had both, internal after finding the ovary wasn't working out and to measure a fibroid that was found.
Maybe next time bring a can of oj or soda or something to get the baby moving? A friend had to do that at her anatomy scan. If they can't get a good measurement next time I'd ask if you can try to drink something to get things moving especially since there's a small window of weeks to get the scan done.
She tried both external and internal U/S. Neither was able to get at the proper "profile view."
That's a good idea on the Coke. I'll take something next week.
Maybe the profile view is just more difficult to get, since the three of us posting here all said something similar. I know my tech used that damn internal cam as if it were a joystick and she was playing a video game. A girl has sensitive lady bits that should be treated nicely
I hope your next appointment goes smoothly.
See, I wish I had been more persistent today. I was the one who suggested getting up to do some jumping up and down. The tech was kind of like "oh well, no can do" right away. I wish she had suggested some roll-around tips.
My boss is going to be just THRILLED that I'm missing another couple of hours out of next Thursday again.
No! I received NO instructions. Now I'm feeling a little extra frustrated, especially if a little caffeine would have helped. I could have taken care of that so easily!
Hmm, I'm sorry! Ya know sometimes doctors do things SO many time maybe they just forgot. I just know they mentioned it too me because they said it helps the baby be awake and moving. Even if they didn't tell you some caffeine won't hurt and I'm sure we all enjoy a little some every now and then. Give it a try! Hope it works for ya next week!
I had one with my twins and she was able to get nuchal measurements twice for each of them. They were super wiggly though. This baby I had measured Tuesday and she was able to get it right away. Again, baby was crazy busy. If baby is relaxing or sleeping, and wont' flip over, I'm sure it would be hard. I did have to cough with one of hte twins and it made him bounce and flip over, which was pretty cute.
It probably also depends on the quality of the machine, the sonographer, etc. Next time, drink some OJ or tea or soemthing - that will get baby moving!!!! I wouldn't worry too much, it's a pretty tiny area to measure. Plus you get to see baby again next week!
Twin boys born too early at 17w4d and 18w2d in February 2010
Transabdominal cerclage placed September 2010
DS born at 35w1d in February 2011
Twin girls born at exactly 36w in February 2013
I didn't realize this could be an issue. I'm having my scan done Monday, and I'll be 13w1d and had to make the appointment with a specialist over an hour away, so I won't be able to go back. Lots of soda before it is!
I'm sorry you have to wait another week, but thank you for posting this. Good luck next Thursday; I hope baby cooperates.
I was never told to drink liquids before with any of my scans. I've had 3 different ones. The internal one they couldnt see the baby, LB was too far up. The other was the extrenal then the NT scan (See my pic below) the nurse said "oh you've got an active one". All I ate for breakfast was cream of wheat and OJ.
I hope youre LO is active next week.
We also had trouble because the baby kept moving. I had a protein bar for breakfast that had some chocolate and some sugar, so the baby was bouncy. He/She also kept putting his hand up by its face, so it took a while to get the image of the nasal/chin bone. Eventually, they got all they needed.
And, they couldn't find my left ovary. Too much junk in the way.
Thanks for this thread! I have my next OB appt on the 5th I will be 11 weeks 4 days. I then will be out of town until my 13th week. I called the doc and scheduled the NT scan for 11:30 on that same day incase I run into the same issue y'all did. This doctor is also an hour away and making another appt will be a challenge!
I had my NT scan this morning, and I too had trouble getting the measurements in the beginning. God Bless the persistent tech, she was so sweet. I think it took about 20 minutes to coax the baby into flipping over, and we finally got a few shots. It looked like s/he was trying to nap, and the tech kept wiggling my belly with the ultrasound wand. It was worth it though, we got a whole CD full of pictures and video. She said her next appointment had cancelled, so we were blessed!
(She did tell me that 40% of the time, they can't get a good measurement. She said if they couldn't, they would just go off the bloodwork.)
