Cow's Milk Allergy in Breastfed Infants

I posted a few weeks ago about my baby having a head to toe rash for three weeks in a row.  We finally discovered that he was reacting to the dairy products I was consuming that were being expressed through my breast milk.  After I cut all dairy out of my diet, he immediately started to get better.  I also noticed that he has been sleeping through the night almost every night too.  Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Yes, DS is allergic to the protein in cow's milk and I BF. In our case, his reaction came pretty quick. He had lots of vomiting and hives and his legs turned blue. Looking back, he had been a bit unformatable after feedings, but I guess I attriubted it to his reflux. I too eliminated all dairy from my diet and he's doing so much better! My son also started sleeping through the night shortly after we got everything situated. They say most kids grow out of it, so hopefully both of ours do!

  • My ds was/is sensitive to cows milk protein. Be had a horrible rash around his little bum hole and it finally (after months!) cleared up after I cut out dairy.

  • DS has had reactions to the top 8 allergens (see my siggy).  He still has a LOT of spit up, but he's a happy spitter and it doesn't really bother him.

When I have something that he's allergic to he gets really gassy, fussy, spits up more, doesn't sleep well at all, and has bad tummyaches.

Dairy and soy are the worst, but we've also had more mild reactions with egg, wheat, and tree nut (I had pistachios).  I don't eat seafood anyway so I'm not testing them, and I'm pretty sure he'll react to peanuts since he's reacting to everything else, so I'm not going to make him sick and miserable to confirm it.  I'm not all that fond of peanuts anyways.

I'm really hoping he grows out of it.  We see a pediatric GI, but I think after our next appt in a couple weeks I'm going to stop seeing him and find an allergist, because I think an allergist would be able to help us more.

  • Yes, DS also gets bad rashes. I totally miss a lot of food, but even the tiniest bit will make him break out, mostly on his bum and face.
