I'm in the process of putting together our birth plan for the hospital, and would love to see any examples of your completed birth plans.
We'll be using the Bradley Method during labor, so birth plans along those lines would be especially appreciated. ![]()
I'm having a hard time keeping things simple enough, while still getting all the pertinent information in there...
Re: Example Birth Plans?
Here is ours. Our Bradley instructor reviewed it. I have to see if I can trim out one or two things to get it all on one page, but it is pretty close. This is in case of a hospital transfer since we plan to deliver in a birth center.
We understand that certain emergency or other medical circumstances may not allow for the accommodation of the goals listed below.
Hospital Labor Goals
Delivery Goals
Umbilical Cord
Newborn Care Goals
Breastfeeding Goals
Photography
Footprints
Cesarean Section (if necessary)
Here's a copy of mine - it all fits onto one page:
We are looking forward to the upcoming birth of our baby and to sharing the experience with you. We have created the following birth plan to help you understand our preferences. We hope to experience birth with little or no intervention. We fully understand that in certain circumstances these guidelines may not be followed, but it is our hope that you will assist us in making this the experience we've hoped for. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know and thank you for being a part of this special day for us.
Labor:
-MTAngel plans to use Bradley natural childbirth method so we ask that references to pain be avoided
-Please do not offer analgesics or anesthesia, we will request them if we want them.
- MTAngel would like as few vaginal exams as possible and as few interruptions as possible.
-MTAngel would like fetal monitoring to be intermittent and external.
-MTAngel would like to be allowed food and drink as long as her Dr deems safe.
-MTAngel would like to avoid labor augmentation. If augmentation is required she would first like to attempt natural methods such as nipple stimulation. Artificial rupturing of membranes and pitocin should only be considered as a last resort.
Birth:
- MTAngel would like to use whatever position feels most comfortable during delivery.
- MTAngel does not want an episiotomy and would prefer to tear naturally. She would appreciate perineal massage and compresses to aid in stretching.
- MTAngel would like to avoid the use of vacuum or forceps during delivery.
Following the Birth and For Baby:
-MTAngel would like to have immediate skin to skin contact and would like to try breast feeding as soon as possible following delivery
-Please delay clamping/cutting the baby's umbilical cord until it has stopped pulsing
-MTAngel would like to deliver the placenta naturally, please do not administer pitocin unless necessary
-Please delay all non-critical procedures until after we have bonded with our baby.
-MTAngel plans to breast feed only. Please do not give pacifiers or formula without permission.
Cesarean Section:
-In the event that a c-section is necessary, MTAngel would like her husband to be present at all times and to follow the rest of our wishes for the postpartum period as closely as possible.
I'm planning a VBAC, so it's required for me to have continuous monitoring and a saline lock at my hospital...the rest of it is pretty basic. If there's time, we'll call ahead about the tub, telemetry unit (there's only one!) and the squat bar, besides having it on my birth plan. We're also really paranoid about the pediatric dept, as DS had a suspected infection (that was never proven), and we were bullied into some really aggressive treatment for him, so we're being extra cautious...
Birth Plan requests:
? I would like to use the telemetry unit for continuous monitoring, have access to a tub and have the squat bar available for pushing
? Please do not offer me pain medications or epidural. I will ask for them if I feel the need
? Heplock only, no IV unless medically neccesary
? No vaginal checks unless I request them
? Please turn down the sound on the monitor to not hear the baby?s heartbeat
? I am planning on doing mother-directed/undirected pushing. I will ask for help or coaching if I feel the need
? Delayed cord clamping
After baby is born:
?Skin-to-skin contact immediately
? No procedures done unless my husband or I have given explicit permission
? The baby is to stay with me or my husband at all times
? If there is a need for medical attention, we would prefer to deal with attending physicians - no residents/students, please
? Please do not give the baby sugar water, formula or pacifiers without our permission
? No Hepatitis B shot
? No antibiotic eye drops
? We will not be circumcising if we have a boy
? DH is allergic to codeine
? I am allergic to sulfa drugs
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
This was the plan that we created. It is very simple and covered all that was important to me. Happy Birthing!
Birth Plan
Our goal is to have a natural unmediated birth and we respectfully request the following of the medical staff during labor.
? Please offer encouragement rather than medication
? Freedom of movement during labor
? Hep lock/saline well rather than IV unless medically necessary
? Minimal cervics checks, only when requested
? Intermittent fetal monitoring 10-15 min/hour
? Please wait to cut umbilical cord until pulsating stops
? Baby to chest with skin to skin contact immediately
? Immediate Breast feeding and a full hour of family bonding with routine procedures delayed or done while holding baby
? Please do not remove vernix
? Rooming in for baby, and no supplemental formula or pacifiers
? No Pitocin for delivery of placenta unless medically necessary
We understand that if any complications arise, mother and baby?s safety are the first priority and will be flexible in our plan. If a problem does occur, please inform us so we can discuss our options with you and decide the best course of action.
Thank you!
