XP: Planning Summer Vacations Next Year?

Hi ladies,

This is probably more a question for ladies who have had babies before, but I'm open to advice from anyone!  First, we have not told our parents about the baby yet.  My in-laws are planning a beach vacation (they'll be renting a house) next year.  It will be them, my SIL & her husband and two small children, MH and me, and our baby.  They are planning for August.  Our baby will be four months old.

Originally, I didn't think a thing of it, and told my MIL that we were in.  Now, MH keeps saying "you can't take a baby to the beach."  I swear he's acting like I'm going to toss the baby in the waves to see if he/she floats.  Obviously, we won't be spending much time ON the actual beach, but I don't see why this will present issues with taking the trip in general.  If the baby needs to stay inside, we'll stay inside, or take turns, etc.  MH is just making me nervous.  Is four months too young to take a baby on vacation?

  • IMO, you can totally bring a baby to the beach. You just need to make sure they're in the shade. You can even bring a pack n play and put them in that with an umbrella over it.

  • I don't have any children, but I have friends and family that took their children on vacation that young.  It was a little different, but in all they were glad they came.  I went on my first vacation at 3 months.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

  • My entire family (13 of us) did a beach vacation over the 4th this year. My nephew was 11 months and my niece was 6 months. My sister in law said that it was nice my niece could sit by herself when we went, but they were going regardless. We had umbrellas and baby pools for them - they even took naps on the towel under the umbrella. I know they are a little older, but I would have bought my baby if she/he was 4 months.

We are actually going up to Maine next summer (flying) when she/he is only 2.5 months. You make it work for you! : )

  • My parent have a place on the coast ds was about 4 or 5 months the first time we took him.  We just take the pack n play and set up a tent ds didn't get in the water but we had a great time.  He slept most of the time and we had lots of help with family.  Go for it you will be happy you did!
  • My twin cousins came to Mexico on a family vacation when they were 6 months old. It was fine - sometimes someone had to take turns sitting inside with them during naps, but the loved splashing in the water and sitting in the sand (in the shade).

  • If you don't think it will be a problem and can handle it, then do it.  I personally would still go.  In fact I am still planning on going to the lake next summer, I go every year with my family, so why stop now?

  • Shouldn't be a problem at all.  4 months is a good age, you will be in a routine by then but your LO won't be mobile yet so there will be no reason to child proof the rental home.  You'll have lots of family members to hold the LO so you get some vacation time too :)

  • I would definitely go!  We took our DS to Florida when he was 10 weeks old.  It was his first flight and he was great.  He was also to the beach when he was 4 and 6 months.  I plan on going to the beach when baby #2 is only about 7 weeks.  My parents offered to pay and since I won't be working for a while we are taking them up on it!  :)

  • I do not think that is a problem at all. I would totally go, I did with my DD.
  • We took DS to the beach when he was 3 months old.  We got a sun tent and set it up on the beach to keep him out of the sun.  We then took turns playing with him while the other got to swim.  At 3-4 months DS was incredibly portable and he enjoyed the trip.

  • Kate spent a week at the beach with us at 3 months and again at 6.  It was hard, but no harder than being at home!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Well we are expecting number 2 in May...and I am planning on the beach end of august. I think it'll be great. Rent a house with AC and chill there, go on the beach or the pool, back for a nap....that is a great portable age for a baby...its when they are 1-2 years old and mobile and eating sand that its difficult! Take the baby and have fun!
