twin etiquette

Hi ladies,

My  BIL & SIL recently had an adorable set of twins. DH is going to be the godfather of one of the twins. So my question is - do we just get his godson a gift for the christening? or do we get both babies something?

Any suggestions on a gift? They aren't particularly religious and are more doing the christening to appease family (I think), so a bible/cross doesn't feel appropriate. Saivngs bond? Silver engraved cup? Do parents like receiving those silver or pewter baby things or are they dust collectors?

    Personally I would get each baby something (that way the parents don't have a thought that maybe you prefer one over the other).  Secondly, I do NOT like things like silver cups, baby rattles, etc, like you said, they're just dust collectors and knick knacks (I hate knick knacks).  I think a savings bond is a great idea.

    well, my sister is godmother to two of my boys, and she got silver spoons for those two, and i'll admit, i felt bad for the other boy who doesn't have one. :P (not that he cares, ha ha!)

    I'd probably get something for both babies, just so no one feels bad.  

    And I can be kind of old-school/traditional when it comes to that type of thing, so I like silver cups and rattles as special gifts. But a savings bond is a nice idea too. It depends on what you think your BIL and SIL would prefer, I guess.

    Most people got something for both girls for their christening, it was mostly money. The savings bonds were nice. We took all the money from their baptism and started each of the girls a savings account with it.

    we always do savings bonds for christenings...and I would get one for each baby...

    I would do both babies.  I like (but wouldn't buy for myself) things like silver/pewter cups, so they make a nice gift, IF you think the SIL would like :)  If she seems like she hates that kind of thing, skip it.  FWIW, I'd prefer pewter - less maintenance than silver.

    I know it's probably not traditional, but I bought books for my friend's son when he was christened.

    Most of our godparents got each child a little something then got their godchild a savings bond.

    I'm going against the other replies here but I think the Godparent really only needs to buy something special for their Godchild. The other twin shouldn't be neglected but I wouldn't feel obligated to buy them the same thing. And maybe rethink the cross necklace idea because although they may not be particularly religious like you said, they are still having a Christening and a cross from your Godparent on your Christening day is pretty special. JMO. GL. =)

    I don't like knick knack things either!  Babies and kids have enough stuff, I'd prefer something practical (clothes, or age appropriate toys).  I think a savings bond is an EXCELLENT idea!  Who doesn't want to save money for their kids future?  Plus, with twins I'm sure they'd love any help they can get with saving money for their future :)  And yes, I'd get something for both babies.

    thanks, everyone! this is helpful.

    We've definitely been getting two gifts for the twins so far (shower, birth, etc) I just wasn't sure if the godchild was supposed to receive something special.

    I think we're going to go with the savings bonds. My godparents always did this, and I was eventually able to cash them out to fund a semester abroad. Talk about a nice present!

    I had two different set of people and they bought gifts for both.  They got savings bonds & gaurdian angels that hang on their cribs & a few other items.

    I don't like knick knacks at all...but I don't consider the silver rattles, cups, dishes that are engraved to be knick knacks.  My grandfather got all his grandchildren silver engraved items at Tiffany's when we were born.  Mine is a small silver dish that is on my dresser now and holds my pearls.  He got my girls engraved cups when they were born, and I assume they'll use them on their dresser for something pretty someday.
