Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how to get baby to nap during day?

My son is 8 weeks old.  He sleeps relatively well at night, waking up twice.  The day time is terrible though.  I try to have him nap every 1.5-2 hrs.  He will get drowsy while in my arms, I'll swaddle him, then eventually put him down and within 5-10 min he's up again.

He basically needs to be in my arms all day to be settled or out on a stroll in the stroller or baby carrier.  He only stays in bouncer for max 10 min.

I'm feeling really exhausted during the day and find that I barely have time to even eat.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Oh my LO did this....I was at my wit's end. I don't know if it's how old she is but at 9 weeks I started putting her in her bassinet (which she never slept in before) in her room when she was drowsy and played ocean noise relatively loud. She would fall right to sleep without crying. It was so weird! She's done this for 2 weeks now...sleeps every 1.5-2 hours either in her swing or in her room with the noise. I downloaded it off itunes. We had tried white noise before...even this same song and it did nothing for her, but at 9 weeks she was FINALLY taking naps and seemed to like it. Hang in there and try everything! She usually only sleeps for 30 minutes each time but its a break.

I'm going through the same thing with my DS!

  • DS takes his naps swaddled in the swing (on as high as it will go) listening to "Piano Man" by Billy Joel (lol, I'm not sure why he loves this song so much!!). He isn't much of a napper either, so this is the only thing that works for us. I draw all the blinds in the livingroom so its dim and he gets the hint that it's nap time. I can't get anything more than 15-20 min. cat naps out of him without following this routine. When I do this, I can get up to 2.5 hours!!
  • I don't try to get him to nap. He'll fall asleep or get very close to it and if he's not in the car seat or swing I'll just lay him down. If he wakes up when I lay him down I'll swaddle him and sway him until he's almost alseep and lay him in the RNP and rock him to sleep.

He usually naps twice a day for an hour or two, but never at the same times. If the above doesn't work and he turns into an over tired fuss pot I'll wear him.

  • We have a routine that we're tweaking. I get her a bottle ready, change her, swaddle her- even though she hates it. Once I give her the bottle she calms down. When she's done I lean her up just a bit (with her still facing to one side) and burp her/pat her butt until she's completely out. (I think that the over the shoulder burping bothers her tummy and encourages spit up) Usually I'm rocking back and forth on the couch while I'm doing this.

If it's not time to eat, I replace the bottle with a paci. She will usually get fussy 2-4 times in the 30 minutes it takes me to put her to sleep. But, if I just hold her tight, let her whine for a second, and put the paci back in, she falls back asleep.

Then I put her down s.l.o.w.l.y.!

Daytimes are getting better and better.

  • OMG a nap every few hours? I'm lucky if I get one a day :( Stupid me took a college class this semester and it's kill me between the not napping and colic!

LO fights me so hard but when I'm in class falls right asleep for my mom for 1-3 hours, I've tried everything she does even pumping to give a bottle instead of bf....

Thank goodness for the FP OW swing atleast she'll stay in that for about 30mins twice a day without screaming

(as sick as it sounds) happy to know i'm not alone with a "non"-napping lo

  • Read "Baby Wise".
  • I could have written this myself....My eight week old naps only somedays and i usually have to walk him or put him in the car for this to happen.  I need help too!
  • Glad to know I'm not the only one.

DS will apparently nap at his daycare lady's house, but once we get home in the evenings he will not take a nap. He fusses and fusses and is clearly tired, but no matter what you do 99% of the time he will not sleep. It makes for a very frustrating evening.

  • Going on 2 hrs laying in my arms......

Both naps today I tried putting him down, gently and asleep. Both times he woke up 2 mins later. I usually have to hold him for naps but at least he sleeps!

I wish I knew the secret

  • My LO sleeps in his bouncer listening to the "easy listening" channel on the TV. he is usually only in there for a half hour (must be this age). The only way I can get him to sleep longer is to let him sleep on my chest, this way I can sleep too!
