Vag vs. C-Section Delivery ? for those who had both

Has anyone had a vaginal delivery and then chose to have a c-section? Or had to have a c-section too? I just wanted to know which you preferred if you had a hard vaginal delivery.

My v-delivery with my first baby was 2 straight hours of pushing (all together with induction 27 hours) with a midwife I was not too happy to end up with on that day and somehow I don't think I healed great. I am 10 weeks along in this pregnancy and sooo scared to have to deliver like that again. I just had an internal ultrasound and it hurt!

Need some advice or stories please!!

  • I only had V, but I hear the 2nd one is easier because your body's already done it.  Not sure if it's true or not FWIW.

  • I had a 36 hour labor with my DC, 3 hours of pushing and it ended in a c/section.  I would have much rather delivered vaginally.  A c/section is MAJOR surgery. Don't forget that.

  • I had a natural vaginal delivery with my daughter and would not do it any other way.  I understand that you are scared of the pain and a long delivery, but a c-section is MAJOR surgery with weeks of recovery. Labor is hard, not easy, but most likely your second birth will be shoter than your first. My adivse would be to not have an elective c-section and trust that you body can do what it was made for. Good luck with you decision.
  • This is a great question!  I had an emergency c-section with my DS. I really would have rather had a vaginal delivery. The recovery time was horrible. Trying to get around with a newborn when you are suppose to be resting isn't ideal. I wouldn't recommend have an elective c-section. If it comes to the point where the safety of you and your child are at risk, c-section is a great option.

I'm stoked because my doc said they do consider doing VBAC's depending on your prevous delivery. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can experience what women are naturally made to do.

Keep your chin up, maybe your second will be much easier Wink

  • I had an emergency c-section with my son, and it was overall a really good experience. I healed nicely and things went smoothly. However, it is a major surgery, as others have pointed out, and I didnt leave my hospital bed for 4 days, once i got home, I was stuck on the couch for a while and moved around very slowly, so that needs to be taken into consideration. You wont be up holding your LO walking around right after birth if you do a c-section.

I wouldnt recommend opting for one, if your doctor would even let you. Not to sound harsh, but giving birth isnt suppost to be comfortable, and your story sounds like 1,000's of other birth stories, so its normal what you went through.

Good luck either way, you've got some time to think it over.

  • I had a scheduled c-section due to breech with DS.  It was so nice that everything was planned and was so easy.  I can't compare healing time to a vag delivery, but I personally enjoyed the extra hospital time.

My friend that's a L&D nurse elected to have both her kids via c-section based on what she has seen.

I'm looking into vbac, but will probably have another c-section this time.

  • I know that you explicitly asked for opinions from those who had both, but I want to put in my two cents, too.

I had an emergency c/s with my son, so I have experienced both labor (though not pushing) as well as c/s and a recovery. I would give ANYTHING to have delivered vaginally--because of the emergency c/s it was several hours before I could see and hold my son. Also, the recovery was very difficult and slow; I essentially felt very weak for a long time.

Did your provider give you any medical reason that a c/s would be necessary? Two hours of pushing is very common (though I'm sure very difficult) from what I've read.

  • My birth story was very similar to yours, and I was thisclose to an emergency c-section. I'm extremely thankful that I was able to have a vaginal birth.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of elected c-sections because of the risk that comes with surgery and the added medical intervention, but in the end, it's your body, your baby, and your decision.

  • I also had an emergency c-section with my daughter and it was a major surgery and a lot of recovery time. You triple your stay in the hospital typically with a c-section. I also have stairs at home and the first 2 weeks were really difficult caring for a newborn. I will have a scheduled c-section again with this one and am hoping for a smoother recovery. I do not agree with elected c-sections, but its a choice you and your OB make together. Best of luck!
  • I'm in the minority here, but I'd choose a c-section over a tough natural delivery. A friend of mine ended up with a 3rd degree tear, and honestly I think my recovery was easier. I was up exercising and pain free before she was. I had a really easy recovery with my c-section, and even though my doctor will let me attempt a VBAC, I've opted for another section. My DS was 10lbs with a head off the charts in size (probably why I didnt dialate) and I have no desire to deliver a child like that personally. To each their own though. Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • My mom had both. She said it boiled down to vaginal delivery = can't sit down, c/s = can't sit up. However, the recovery time for a c/s is 6 weeks, vs only a couple weeks for a vaginal delivery. I think your next delivery should be smoother. You may want to see someone (a counselor or something) to talk about your delivery anxieties before you get too close to delivery. I also had a traumatic experience with my first and I have worked through some issues, and feel prepared and eager to have another chance at a vaginal delivery.

FWIW one of my CWs just had her second, after a really long labor with her first, she had her second after like a 6 hour labor.

  • I had to have an emergency section with my DS. (The cord was wrapped around his neck and with every contraction his heart rate plummeted)...at first I felt like a failure...like I missed out on something. So for this child I would love a VBAC..of course have to meet with the doctor and see if he agrees. This is a new practice that I am in bc we moved...so not sure if they will agree or like to do those. The section recovery was hard (but at that time we lived in an apt--so there were no steps) but now we are in a home. I am eager for my first appt to see what they say. Good luck. I am looking forward to the responses to this question. Would I rather have a stomach ache or a vagina ache???

  • Your transvaginal u/s hurt??? Hmm

I don't understand why someone would want major surgery in place of a natural birth.

  • I've had two v-deliveries.  My first son weighed 9lbs. 11oz.  The second delivery I had was sooooooo much easier even though baby boy number two weighed 10lbs. 7oz!  I did a med free delivery with both and felt great within an hour or two of them being born.  So, perhaps things will be easier the second time around!  We can only hope, right?... :-)
