Natural Birth

Talk to me about tubs...

Just found out last night that our MW no longer has a tub for use.  I know about the horse trough idea, and I like it but I don't know what I would do with it after.

DH wants to get the larger kiddie pool available on www.yourwaterbirth.com, it is $50 vs. close to $200 for the "real" birthing tubs.  It is just as large (190 gallons) and only 4 inches less deep.  My MW said she has attended 40-50 births with a kiddie pool and never had an issue with is popping or leaking.

Anyone have thoughts or experiences to share?

Re: Talk to me about tubs...

  • We used the aquariuim pool from that web site for DD's birth; the one that costs $25:

It was plenty deep enough, and the sides were sturdy enough for me to lean over.  There was also enough room in it for both me and DH.  I don't think you really need anything bigger.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • I really don't want to spend $200 on a tub, so we will probably try something like that too.  If it's good enough to use the rest of the time, why not for labor?

I paid my OB last time $200 for a tub rental and then I wasn't allowed to use it because they put me on Pit.  I didn't get my money back and I'm still pissed.

  • DH and I are trying to decide between the LaBassine for $130, or the kiddie pool. We know we'll be having more kids so we're thinking the more expensive one for multiple use.

We have this for our backyard, my MW says it's safer to have an inflatable floor on the pool, this one doesn't have it, otherwise I'd be using it.

Interesting, did she say why it would be safer?

    Thanks for the info.

Of course, this is the one DH wanted...I may or may not tell him you said this, lol.

Did you get the pump and other goodies?  If not, how did you empty it?

she says sometimes the baby comes out pretty fast and she'd rather there be cushion there instead of just floor underneath. I guess safer for baby's head in case of a fast slippery entrance.
  • I'm planning to rent the aquadoula.... about $200. I'll be pissed though if I end up eating the rental cost like Iris. Maybe I'll set it up in the living room a month early and hang out in it every day to get my money's worth.

A difference for me was being able to control temp. (A MW we interviewed who uses the 'cattle trough' said she'd have us jack up the thermostat on our water heater so that we start with really hot water that we then cool down as needed. Sounded like a lot of extra work and I like warm water.)

Yes, we bought the pump, hose, connectors for the sink, liner, and I think that's it.  Filling it took awhile.  I do remember that the pump didn't work that well for emptying it, but can't remember what exactly the deal was.  DH and my brothers ended up using buckets.  I didn't actually deliver in the water, so there was nothing floating in there, and the tub actually sat, full, in our bedroom for a day or two.  (FYI, this isn't the 190-gallon one; it's the smaller, 100-gallon one.  I wouldn't get the larger one because it will take much longer to fill and this one is really big enough.)

  • I had this one, which I bought off a friend who never used it.

I also had a fishnet, electric air pump, and floating thermometer. Under the pool we put a waterproof tablecloth from the dollar store and an old blanket. The floor inflates.

I think it was the perfect size, though I wished my H had filled it a bit more. In his defense, though, labor was FAST. I was glad it had an inflatable bottom because I spent a lot of time on my knees in it, so it helped my comfort.
