2nd Trimester

I'm a little frazzled!!!!

Our 7 month old brittany spaniel was chewing on the end of her rawhide. Well, next thing we hear is her sounding like she was going to throw up!!! Husband freaked out and dragged her over to the tile as to not throw up on the carpet!

I screamed at my husband to stop because she's choking!!!!

She was scared and started biting my husband when he'd get close. I yelled at him to stop because he was making it worse. She stopped making throw up noises and started to wheeze. I went over to her and in a calming voice started soothing her and got her to calm herself.

She made a weird noise and stopped wheezing. I was holder her sides and could tell she was starting to get weak. I had husband hold her and I shoved my hand down her throat and pulled out the rawhide.

It was all bloody and gross. Puppy threw up... and I threw up too. Husband cleaned it up.

Puppy now is cuddled up in my lap and won't move.

I'm going to sign up for the infant first aid/CPR class I've been putting off now.

Re: I'm a little frazzled!!!!

  • Wow.  I am glad everyone is okay.  Sorry you threw up.  Yikes.  Yes, those classes are important.  I need to renew my cards.  Plus I think I am taking a first responders class before she's born so I will have some stuff on hand.

  • You can take pet CPR classes too eh? They have at least two places teaching it in my dinky city, so if you google it I'm sure you'd find a class close to you.

  • Definitely scary - glad she's ok!

This is exactly why I never will give my dogs rawhide though - it's a huge choking risk - I don't even know why they sell it :-(

  • Our boxer did that when he was about 7 months old!  He got the knot at the end undone and was trying to swallow it!  I also had to shove my had done his throat to pull it out and he, nor the other dogs, have had one since!  I am glad she is ok!
  • Good story.... glad things turned out okay. This part made me laugh:

HEHE! I'm glad you liked how I typed it! That's exactly how it happened. He didn't even say a thing. That was the pregnancy related part in the story. I have thee weakest stomach with all the morning sickness!

  • That is super scary!  I'm glad she's ok.  This same thing happened to one of our girls when she was about 6 mo. old.  That was the last rawhide our dogs would ever see.  Now I go to the butcher and buy marrow bones.  The dogs go nuts for the meat left on them and the bones are virtually indestructible (for my girls/guy anyway).

  • Our dog ate a handful or so of semi-sweet chocolate chips this weekend (that my DH left on the ground in the front porch...) and i learned the value of keeping hydrogen peroxide on hand...10 ml and 5 mins later, dog threw up all the chocolate! So easy!  And guess what...I cleaned it up because DH was gagging at the smell! He's gonna have to get over that one real fast with stink diapers and I'm pretty sure he's totally unaware at how awful baby poop can smell.

  • I do normally give him rawhides too but this has me scared enough to stop!

  • Sorry that's awful.  I work with dogs and I get so upset every time this happens because most people don't know how dangerous rawhide is for dogs, especially puppies.  It also tears up their intestines on the way down so imagine how uncomfortable for them.  Hope you and your puppy have a better nightSmile

  • One of our boxers does this also.  No rawhides are allowed in my house anymore!!  He tries to swallow it whole, chokes, then vomits...did it with the pig ears too.  Now they just have chew toys, no bones...

  • Ahhhh, so scary! Glad to hear everything is better!
