POLL: Is DC's door closed at night???

I saw a post below and it just made me wonder how many people actually keep the door shut in their child's bedroom at night at this age.

I don't even like "my" door shut at night--so I wouldn't do that to DS. I do keep it 'almost' shut--and then we have an unlatched walk-thru baby gate there.  We keep it unlatched because he will come in our room in the morning---and he's never wandered the house--plus he's super loud going through it so it always wakes us anyways.

But I would just think it's scary to be in an enclosed room--but maybe I'm overthinking it.  Did it help your LO sleep??

  • Yes I close their door at night - otherwise they don't go to sleep.

  • No.  All of our doors are open.  I have never slept with the door closed, and actually I can't.  It drives me nuts.

  • Yes, his door is usually shut. We live in a very open house and the TV is often on, so he'd hear everything. Plus, the cats would get in his room and he'd end up chasing them around. And DD's room is right next to his, and we are often in and out.

It doesn't bother him. In fact, he will shut his own door if it's not completely closed. LOL.

ETA: I should add that he's been able to open doors for about 18 months now, so he's able to get out when he wakes up or if he needs to.

  • I don't close the door at night.   We only have the one baby monitor, and it's in the baby's room.  DS has to come get us if he is having a problem.

  • Her door is always shut. I never really gave it much thought. We always closed her door when she was in her nursery too. If I left her door open, she'd just keep coming out to see what we were doing.
  • Nope.

  • Yes we close his room at night. He wakes easily if he hears us in the morning.

  • Both kids sleep with their door shut.

They will always sleep with the door shut after seeing (on dateline or 20/20) what happens during a fire with a door open verus shut.

  • Yes we close her door at night that way the cats don't go in there & bother her!  We have 2 & 1 of them likes to go in her room when she's sleeping & cuddle up with her at night & normally she ends up waking up!

    Pretty much all of this.

  • Yes, his door is completely closed and has been since day 1.  He has always slept just fine that way.  He can open all doorknobs so it doesn't matter that I close it or our door for that matter, because he can still come and go if he chooses.  We sometimes close ours and sometimes its open, for no reason.
  • Yes! Both kids sleep with their doors closed. They have since they started sleeping in their own rooms. We have a small house and they wake hearing me clean the kitchen, etc after bedtime. JD knows how to open his door but we also have the hall gated off so he can't wander the house in the middle of the night. He came in to our room once at 2:00 AM and it freaked me out!

  • DS just recently started requesting that we keep his door open.  I'd always closed it so he wouldn't be able to hear DH and I moving around downstairs.

  • His door is shut until he is fallen asleep then I crack the door so he can come get us if needed (or wake us up in the morning on weekends)
  • Door open, mainly b/c the door won't close with the way I have the baby gate installed (it's on the inside of the door jamb so he can't perhaps push it out forward); bedrooms are on the second floor and he hasn't mastered going down stairs yet.  We're hopefully moving to a one-floor house so I might just start closing his door, we'll see!

  • Yes. DC's room is right off of the living room, so the lights, TV, and dog will definately keep them up. Plus we have semi steep stairs going to our bedroom and don't want them trying to climb them at night.
  • I have been keeping it open lately but previously just closed it so it was open only a few inches (to block noise).

  • Yes, DS has slept with a closed door since day 1, mostly to keep the cat out and to block noise from the rest of the house. He's used to it, and sleeps great.
  • Yes, we close his door.  If the door is even a little open, he will point to it and say "Door open!" letting us know it's open and he wants it closed.

  • Yes, he sleeps w/ his door closed.  I can't having him roaming the house at night while we are sleeping.

  • DD's door has been closed since we moved her into her room when she was around 3 months old. In the past couple of months though, she's been going through a weird sleeping phase, so we've kept it cracked open. Now that she's back to normal, the door is shut: her room is right next to the living room, so she'd see all the lights and hear all the noise and wouldn't go down.
  • Lily's door has always been shut at night.

  • Yep, both DD and DS sleep with their doors shut and always have. Our place is small and they'd wake up from noise if they were open. We only have one monitor (in DDs room), so we keep our door open so I can hear DS if need be.

  • Shut, for her safety, fire, and I just  too scared that she will get out and start rooming the house, even though she still sits in her toddler bed and calls for us to come get her..  I also like the fact that her door squeaks so if for some reason someone would come into our house and open her door, we would hear it on the monitor.  Weird I know.
  • Yes, we have always closed her door, and we close DD2's door as well. We have an open floor plan so they would never sleep if we left them open. We also close ours. Oh, and our dog is super annoying at night with her licking and coming in to rub herself all over the sides of the bed so closing the doors keeps her out, too!

  • I don't close it at night, but I do close it during nap while I'm moving around the house so I wont interupt his nap.  But at night we are sleeping and we don't have a night light in his room (we have on in the hall).  I'm scared he may hurt himself trying to get out of his room with the door closed.
  • DD's door has always been closed until recently. She is scared of the dark now, so we leave it open and the hall light on for her. She has a night light in her room but it doesn't seem to help.

  • All 3 of my kids have their doors completely closed at night.  It's to keep out the noise and for fire safety.

  • yes, his door is closed tightly.  why, because the cat would go in there and wake him.  Or a loud movie/guests would wake him.

We close our door for part of the same reason- cat.

  • DD sleeps with the door shut but she doesn't know the difference because she has slept with the door if not all the way shut almost all shut since she went into her room around 6 months. I do sleep with my door open so I can hear her.

  • yes- all of our doors are closed at night.

When i was a kid my door was open a little bit at night- i do remember that...

but we close them so they don't wake each other up if one wakes and cries... and so WE don't wake them up since we stay up longer than they do.

we also close the doors to keep the rooms cool/warm - so the heat/ac is not wasted and going into the hallway and down the stairs.

  • A little late posting this but we have closed dd's door since day one. Especially since it is right off our only full bath in the house and if it was not closed DH would wake her every morning. Also it is right next to our living room and she would never fall asleep if we didn't. I personally do not think it is a big deal at all.

  • Shut.

I'll bite - someone explain the fire safety issue.

  • All of our doors are open.  That is how I had it when I was growing up too.
  • Closed every night. When she was a baby I didn't want the cat in there. We still use our video monitor so I know what she is up to.

  • If he is in the crib, the door is shut.  I would prefer for it to be shut all the time cause we have 2 cats and 2 dogs.  The cats scare him at night and the dogs tend to bark at cars, so lots of noise.  But when he is sleeping in the big bed, he insists on having the door open, so we leave it cracked.
  • yes DS's door is closed as is ours. MH sometimes likes to turn the tv up too loud and the sound travels up the stairs.
