RP: Which pump do you use?

(Also posted this on the multiples board.)

The prescription I have for a hospital rental is soon to run out, and I'm faced with either paying cash to continue to rent ($80 per month) or buying a pump. Breastfeeding is going well enough that I think I ought to buy, especially considering we're not done having kids.I'm pretty sure I'd like a medela, either PIS or freestyle. But I can't decide which. If you love yours, will you tell me why?

Facts that matter: 1) I work at home, so, when I go back to work, occasions when I'll need transportability and discreetness will be relatively rare--random work trips and other things like that. But I do need to be able to go out with it. (Taking my rental out is impossible, and it's gotten in my way a couple times.) 2) I loath pumping, so the faster I can get it over with each time, the better.

Thanks!

Re: RP: Which pump do you use?

  • I used a PIS for about a month and hated it.  Ended up buying the Avent Isis Duo and I love it.  The con is that you cannot use it with batteries but you can buy a car adapter for it.  You can buy it on Amazon for $182 right now.

  • I have the Medela PISA.  I LOVED it.  It got the milk out quickly and with a few breast compressions seemed to get everything out.  It's smallish.  I have the one in a "backpack" and it's pretty discreet.

  • I love my PISA.  It's comfortable, fast, efficient, and very portable.  I've heard good things about the freestyle but the extra cost wasn't worth it to me.  The PISA is portable and light enough for my use and if I ever need to pump hands free I'll buy a special bra or just cut holes in a sports bra.

Check to see if your insurance will pay for part or all of your pump.  Your pedi may even write you a prescription if that's what they need to cover the cost.  If not, you could get one at BRU with one of their 20% off in store coupons to save a little money.

  • I have a Medela PISA and love it.  Takes me 15 min to pump and empty, which is great for work and when I'm home with the baby and need to get it done quickly.

I got this pump after HATING my Medela. I love love love this one. The silicone guards are soft and comfortable and you can program it to whatever rhythm you like. Comes in a black purse, too. Its on sale at Target for $150 until Sept 22nd.

  • Have the Freestyle...love it but if the PISA double pumps and has a battery I have heard only good things.  I don't use the handsfree attachments but use a handsfree bra, the handsfree attachment is a PITA.  The only neg for the pump itself is it is loud, but I work from home as well so it doesn't matter, albeit annoying.  DH said a few weeks ago..."I can hear when you're coming into the room".  It def impacts watching TV, etc, but has now turned into white noise!!
  • I love my freestyle! It is small, runs forever when the battery is charged, and comes with a cooler kit to keep milk cold when I'm away from home. It takes me 12 minutes to get all the milk out... Like a PP said, it is a tad loud when you're trying to watch TV or if someone is talking to you from another room. But yeah, I love it.
