Do you tip Carside To Go? (NBR-awesome food mentioned)

Applebee's has carside to go, where you can pick up your food and leave.  Somebody brings it out to your car (unlike Chili's where you need to go inside) but both of the receipts has a place to tip.

When you're taking your food home, do you tip at these places?  I mean, I don't tip at, say, Taco Bell, but at Applebee's they bring it out TO you.  I am torn.

What's the protocol for this??

  • I usually tip like 10%. They did bring it to me, but they didn't really serve me.

  • The Carside people actually have to rely on tips as part of their pay. They get paid slightly more than servers but it's still a tiny amount so yes tip them! I typically tip them 15%...we give our servers when we eat out 20%

I worked at an Applebee's for 10 years - through high school, college, and med school. The Carside servers do get paid a little  bit more than a server (wich is only $2.84/hr). They take your order, package it in the kitchen and make sure it's right, and then bring it to you. They do quite a bit and rely on tips just like the servers, so we tip them (usually 15-20%).
  • We tip them too, even though at the 99 it shows that they already include a "to go packaging" charge.

  • I used to work at a restaurant that had carside pickup and they actually do a bit of work to get your stuff ready, so yes I do tip.
  • Yes, you tip. Unlike many indoor servers, the carside servers are responsible for a little bit more than just ordering and bringing you your food. They take the order, enter it, take part in some prep (salads, veggies, etc), pack it, ring it, and bring it to you. They also rely on tips as much as the other servers (sometimes more). In restaurants where they tip-share, the car-side servers sometimes get shorted in this respect. My sister used to work to-go at Outback and drilled us on this all the time.
