does your 3 or 4 y/o use the computer regularly?

how often? how good are they at it?

dd is not interested.  not at all.   ds gets more excited about it.  he's only used it while I have the jumpstart preschool program open. they would not know how to get to the internet or anything on it and frankly, I could stand for them not knowing that for a little longer.  they are on maybe once a week?

Re: does your 3 or 4 y/o use the computer regularly?

  • Nope. If they happen to come downstairs into the basement before I can catch them or before me they will come over here and play with the keyboard or the mouse but they have no idea what they are doing.

I'm not sure I'm ready for them to play computer games yet. The handheld Leapster and the Tag thing are one thing... but PC computer games I think I want to hold off for at least another year.

  • DD goes through spurts. She likes to play starfall and reader rabbit. We have an old computer in the back and she does not know how to get it started but she does know how to use the mouse.
  • Everyday. She has one of our old laptops that we put on the table in the kitchen for her. I cleared off the desktop and then made shortcuts for Starfall and NickJr and she just goes on when she wants. She won't play for longer than 15-20 minutes, but she does play at least once a day. She turned 4 in May. Ella will be 3 in December and she likes to watch Ava. she will play around on it, but she isn't to sure of what she is doing.

  • DS yes, he started around 3 or 4 and picked it up quickly on how to work the mouse, etc and was interested in it.

DD no, she really has no interest, she watches us sometimes but that's about it.

  • Yes. DD just turned 4 and knows how to get online (starfall) and start her games. She plays for 30-45 minutes every day.
  • DS started playing games at an older 3 and now that he's 5, I have shortcuts set up for him for "his" stuff - starfall, pbskids, nickjr, disney.

He's actually very good at it.  I think it's the boy video game gene.  I'd rather him do this - the games he plays are mostly learning games - than be on a Wii or a DS.

  • Neither of my kids (5 and almost 3) have ever used our computer.
  • He's allowed to play for 10 minutes when we go to the libarary, but that's it. Never at home. I am in no rush.

  • DD is 4 and goes on 1-2 times a week for about 35-40 mins at a time.  She is getting better using the mouse and she loves it.  She goes to pbskids.org most of the time.  We are always looking for new websites and this past issue of Family Fun magazine had the top 10 websites for kids.  We looked at a couple yesterday.

Do you happen to have the list handy? I'd love to get some new sites!

  • DD is 5 but she started playing on the computer a lot at 4.5.  She loves playhouse disney, barbie dot com and starfall dot com.  My 3 year old is interested because he sees his sister play but he doesn't have all the skills down yet.

  • B will go on randomly once a week and then not for weeks and then remember and go on again. We weren't home at all all summer so she never went on.

She's attached to my hip so I don't see her being on for more than 10 minutes if I'm not there.

  • Yes. DS takes a computer class at his preschool on Tuesday afternoons and loves it. He always wants to use my computer, but has been known to change file names or accidentally delete things. Now he can only play with it when I sit with him. But I did just order him a refurbished Dell laptop that he will get for Christmas. He will be 4.5 at Christmas.
  • He went through a spurt of 20 mins a day for a few months.  He didn't go on at all this summer.  I expect when it gets cold out again he'll be interested again.   I was completely surprised at how quickly he picked it up.   Nickjr and PBSkids were his favorite sites.
