1st Trimester

Vanishing twin?..

Has anyone had this happen before? I had my first appointment today(almost 8 weeks), there was 2 sacs, but only 1 baby. The other sac was empty. They said it was a vanishing twin. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this/knows about it. I'm extremely thankful for the baby with the strong heartbeat, but I'm also really sad about the thought of I had another one.

Re: Vanishing twin?..

  • My sister had vanishing twins with both of her pregnancies.  Her OB said it is very common.

  • This happened to me with my first pregnancy.  I had no idea I was having twins until I wasn't anymore... the sac only made it to 5 weeks and my beautiful son is 16 months old already.  It was pretty hard... very odd emotions to be greiving for something/someone you didn't know exsisted.  The next U/S the sac was completely absorbed and you would not have know if I didn't have that early U/S.

I know what you're going through.  At this end of things I think about it every once in a while but I just know in my heart that my son was never meant to be a twin.  That was God's plan all along.

  • I'm actually in the midst of this right now.  We saw two heart beats at our first ultasound at 7w1d, but one of the babies was measuring a week behind the other.  Our RE said that it would probably be a case of vanishing twin syndrome and that the smaller baby probably wouldn't make it.  We've still got hope, after seeing the heart beat that the smaller twin will continue to grow, but also know there is a possibility that it may not.  It really is a hard mix of emotions.  We go in on Wednesday to check and see how things are progressing.

After doing lots of reading, it seems that it is a very common occurrence and that most pregnancies actually start out as twins.  It's being discovered more these days because of good quality, early ultrasounds.

  • This happened to us too but with a triplet. We had our first U/S at 8w 6d and there were three sacs and three babies, but only two heartbeats. Baby C was also a lot smaller, so s/he had clearly stopped growing at least a week prior. We were sad for Baby C, but we feel blessed to know we're having twins.
  • I'm sorry for the emotions that you're dealing with right now.

As PP mentioned, vanishing twins are increasingly common and there is a theory that many more pregnancies than we ever imagined start out as multiples- when you think about it, gestating one baby for 9 months isn't a very efficient way to proliferate the species. But if you imagine that many pregnancies start out as multiples and the body opts to nurture the strongest of the bunch, then it makes a bit more sense.

I know two women who both had vanishing twins and had H&H full term babies.

  • It happened to me today. Went for my first ultrasound and there were 2 sacs. One was empty. The other had a heartbeat. I was sooo happy to have one because I started bleeding this morning and I thought there would be nothing.
