Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Help! Lots and lots of poo - is it diarrhea?

DD pooed about 5 or 6 times yesterday, which is highly unusual for her.  Her stools were not watery, but we did have a few blowouts.  I tried Googling infant diarrhea but the info I found wasn't too helpful.  Some of the poo looked curdly like cottage cheese (she is formula fed).

If it makes a difference, she had a cold earlier this month and that turned into an ear infection. She's done with her medication now and we think she's starting to teethe.

Do you think this is diarrhea or just related to teething?  I'd love your thoughts before we call the pedi.

TIA!

Re: Help! Lots and lots of poo - is it diarrhea?

  • DS had diarrhea a couple weeks ago (also FF) and it was a definite watery mess, so if you have any kind of pasty-ness to the poo I wouldn't think its diarrhea, unless it gets more watery.  I think its likely it related to teething.  Does she have a fever?

  • My pedi told me that consistency doesn't really matter.  Increased frequency is considered diarrhea in babies.

  • Update:  DD does not have a fever, and her poo definitely is not watery.  Called the pedi this morning, and they said that it might be a minor stomach bug or virus.  No need to bring her in unless she isn't eating, has watery poo, blood in her stool or runs a fever above 100 degrees.

We'll just continue monitoring her to see if she improves.

    Thanks, everyone!
