Minnesota Babies

anxiety attack help!!!!

So, I'm due in 3 weeks with my first and I have a lot of things for baby.  My boyfriend thinks we have everything we need for the baby.  But I am having the worst anxiety about not having everything I need. For example.. I only have one set of crib sheets, I don't feel like I have enough cloth diapers or bottles.  Every little thing I think we need, my boyfriend tells me its not a necessity right away.  Am I just being crazy?  What did you all need when your babies were first born?  I'm just trying to figure out if I'm really missing things.  How many cloth diapers/prefolds should I have?

Re: anxiety attack help!!!!

  • To be honest, I really wouldn't cloth diaper for the first 6 weeks. They are pooping about every diaper and I think it is just going to stress you out. I didn't start cding until dd was about 10 weeks and I think anything before that would have put me over the edge. If you do cloth diaper I would suggest probably 20-24 prefolds to that you can wash every 2-3 days.  I would have about 8-10 bottles. 2 crib sheets would probably be easier. The things we used the most when dd was first born was a cradle swing, onesies, sleepers, receiving blankets, swaddle wrap blanket. I think everyone is different though so you really do have time to wait until baby is open to pick up things you would need. It's all work out- don't stress.

  • don't stress! Megan is 3 months old and these are the things we have used the most so far.  Recieving blankets, onsies, halo sleep sacks with the swaddle to sleep in every night, sleepers, an infant bouncy seat, bassinet, and in the last month or so the swing has been WONDERFUL! :)  I don't cloth diaper so I can't help ya there.  We wash bottles almost every time we use them, but we probably have about 5.  When she goes to daycare she uses 3.

We still have megan in her bassinet next to our bed so we only use the crib to nap.  But I only have 2 sets of sheets for the crib and that's plenty. But bassinet sheets we have 3 sets and that is about perfect.

  • I would probably get one more sheet.  The ultimate crib sheet is really nice for middle of the night changes.

I wouldn't buy too many bottles until you know what works best.  I like having a little over a days worth so I can always have my diaper bag set with a couple and so I can run the dishwasher once a day.  A dishwasher container is a must have.  I also highly recommend the Medela Steamer bags for when you don't have a whole load.

Things that are nice to have on hand: baby tylonol and gas drops, swaddle blankets, pacifers, thermomiter.

  • It is so stressful trying to have everything you think you need before your baby gets here.  I am a list making freak and had 2 page lists of everything to get done/buy and my DH thought I crazy!  Try not to stress too much.  Your boyfriend can always run to the store if you need something.  Or he can watch the baby while you run out...you'll get a quick break then too;)

When we brought Ellie home we used:

3 bottles - Nuk brand and 3 bottles - Evenflo brand (once we found out she prefered Nuk we went and bought more.

    Pacifiers

    7 sleepers and onesies

    Lots of burp rags

A Boppy and swing.  She spent a lot of time in both of those.

I have 3 crib sheets.  She was in the bassinet in our room for 6.5 months so we just started to have to use sheets.

Receiving blankets for swaddling - I had 3.

  • thanks so much for the help ladies,  my nerves have been calmed a little knowing I only am missing just a couple things Smile But being a first time mama I'm sure I'm always going to be worrying about something which I probably won't be able to help!
  • I would for sure have a waterproof mattress cover that goes under the sheet.  And I would have at least 2 or 3 crib sheets so you don't feel compelled to wash them immediately when they get wet/poopy.  We had 4 bottles.  DD just took whatever bottle we gave her...she had no preference, so we didn't wait and see what she liked before buying bottles, we chose what we liked.

Diaper cream, halo sleepsack (we got one in the hospital when she was born and it was priceless!), and pacifiers were our big needs at first.  We did stop at Target on our way home from the hospital because DD was wearing newborn diapers and all we had at home were size 1's.

  • I would definitely get a couple extra sheets, just in case :)

We cloth diapered from the day her cord fell off, it really wasn't any additional stress. We would have CD'd from day one, but her rise was too short for most of our diapers to not irritate it. We plan on CDing from day one next time, especially since hospitals use pampers and I won't let those touch the butts of my kids!
