i only had my son on whole for maybe 6 months and then moved him to 2%... you should be fine to switch to 2% now. your lo might have a hard time going straight from whole to skim, might help if you transition with 2%, then 1%.
DS had his 2.5 year appt. today. We asked about switching from 2% to skim since that's what DH and I drink. She said no, only b/c DS is still "skinny" (only 29lbs). She said a good compromise for our family would be 1%. Maybe if your LO is ok weight wise, they wouldn't mind you switching to skim. I would ask before doing it though.
young children should not drink skim milk. They need the fat from milk to aid their growth and development. at 2, we switched from whole milk to 2 percent
Our pedi had us stay on whole milk for another year. My girls only drink about 8-12oz. of milk a day and the one is only in the 20th % for weight and the other is in the 40th. She said they need the fat for brain development and since they are no where near overweight, she wants to keep them on whole milk.
I think it will depend on your child as to whether the pedi will recommend it. If you child is on the skinny side or doesn't drink a lot of milk to begin with they may want you to stay on whole or only drop to 2%. The kids that drink like 24oz. a milk a day and don't want to eat, I see the pedi recommending skim to get them to start eating food instead of drinking milk.

we switched Griffin and Gibby to 2% just a couple weeks after starting milk... both were/are good eaters and chubby babies and did not need the added fat.
gray is still on whole b/c he's a picky eater and smaller.
griffin switched to 1% at 2y... Gibby will, too.
i don't plan to switch to skim for a while... maybe 5y/o
Like all PP said, it will depend on your LO's diet, size and pedi recommendation. DS is above average size and eats really well so we were comfortable switching to skim at around 2.
