Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6-8 weekers...how much and how often are LO eating?!

Wether it's BF, FF, or pumped BM.

If I bottle feed her BM she eats about 2oz every 2 hours, if I nurse it's every 2 hours. How do you guys get them to have longer periods in between feedings? I know BM digests faster but I know of babies that go 3-4 hours and just drink more at a time. I've tried feeding her more at a time but she only drinks 2 oz no matter how much milk I put in the bottle.

Re: 6-8 weekers...how much and how often are LO eating?!

  • We got DS to eat every 3 hours during the day by slowly increasing time between feedings.  It used to be feeding on demand which was getting to be too much for me since during growth spurts he would eat almost every 45 minutes!  I BF every 3 hours and let DS eat as much as he wants, usually 10 minutes on each side.  He is working on STTN and can go 6 hours at night in between feedings.  I am pumping but am not feeding by bottle so I can't say for sure how much he's eating at once.

DS also likes to suck so we give him the pacifier when he starts to get fussy in between feedings.  It helps and often sooths him to sleep.  It's comforting to him and prevents him from using me as a pacifier!

    Good luck!

  • During the day I nurse my LO and he usually eats every 2 hours. At night he usually sleeps for about 4 hours after his last feeding (which I should add that the last feeding is a bottle of formula) and then will wake up to nurse and will go back to sleep for 2-4 hours.

Every baby is different but I think at this age it's pretty normal to be eating every 2 hrs. Maybe you could try giving your LO more at each feeding and they might go longer in between?

  • DS nurses about every 2 hours.  If he takes a bottle, he usually takes 2-3 oz. If we try to give him more (believing that he is still hungry), he usually vomits a lot afterwards.  Not sure how to increase time between feedings, but I'm looking forward to reading other suggestions.

  • I don't bottle feed yet so I have no idea how much she gets but she eats every 2 hours during the day, clusterfeeds every hour in the evening and goes 2.5-5 hours overnight.

  • some days mia eats 2 ounces every 2 and 1/2 hours, some days she'll go 3 or 4 hours and just eat more at each feeding. we prefer the longer ones, obvi, but i just let her do her thing.

  • Our little ones were born at 36w5days, so technically preemies, so they may be a little behind- they eat every 3hours 1 oz BM and 2-3oz formula. If my wife BF, she tries to get them to do at least 10min and then they usually do 2oz formula.

Once in awhile we get 3.5-4 hour stretch, but with two, once ones up, the other is too :-)

  • Ds usually eats 10min on the breast.  I have great milk supply right now, so he only gets one breast at at time.  I can pump out 4 oz on one breast in 10 minutes.  So, I give him 4 oz and he takes most of it.  Sometimes he only does 3 oz, and sometimes he has done a bit more than 4 oz.  I've never forced it.

The first time I gave him BM in a bottle, I started out with 2 oz, and when he downed that, I gave him another oz.

He usually eats every 2.5 to 3 hrs during the day.  At night he will go 6-7 hours in a row, then wakes and eats, then does another 2-3 hours of sleep. I can't complain.

My pedi told me to go by the formula fed baby amounts when I give him BM in a bottle.
