Parenting after a Loss

How long do you let a newborn cry?

When Maya gets up at night, she BF's on one side, gets a clean diaper and then BFs on thec other side.  This takes about an hour and occurs about every 3.5 hours.  When I put her down, she is quiet for a minute but will let out a few intermittent cries.  Sometimes, she goes to sleep and sometimes the cries escalate and I pick her up and comfort her again before putting her dow.  Is it ok to ignore two or three squeals?  I keep reading to comfort them every time they cry, but it seems she would never fall asleep if this were the case.  How long do you let a newborn cry?

  • I think it's ok to ignore little squeals.  If it's a constant cry, I pick her up.  If it's just a few seconds I wait it out.

  • If she is going to sleep after a few squeals, it's probably fine.  You know your baby best!  You're not supposed to let a newborn CIO - they can't comfort themselves when they're that young - but that's not what you're doing.

  • I agree with everyone else. Sometimes babies need to let off some steam before they can fall asleep. It sounds like that is what your LO is doing.

  • Honestly that is a parenting question that only YOU can answer. Every baby has a different temperament and every parent has a different response or gut instinct about various sounds and cries. Go with your mommy gut on this one - not what someone tells you you SHOULD do.

  • i think that's something a parent will always struggle with.. how and when to respond. i think as long as you are consistently responding to active, escalating crying, you are doing a good job.
  • Thanks all!  I think I just needed to be reassured I wasn't being a 'bad' mommy.  MH wants to pick her up at every coo and comfort her.  So we clash on this.  I never thought I'd be the 'tough' parent!
  • I would let a newborn "fuss", I wouldn't let them cry.  I think as a mom you know which is which.... so I would pick her up when she escalates, but let her fuss if that's what she needs to do to settle.
