Alabama Babies

Who to believe

The Pediatrician's Nurse or the LC (who is an RN)

1) Alexander's poop in the past week has gone from mustard and seedy to green and stringy. Only about once a day is it mustard and seedy. The Nurse said not to worry about color just be on the lookout for blood. The LC said that is a sign of an upset belly.

2) Alexander is almost 8 weeks and when I weighed him he was a whopping 13lbs. His birthweight was 7lbs5oz. The Nurse said not to worry because he was in the 75th percentile for weight (is that for all babies that are 8 weeks or just the ones that are 8 weeks and had the same birthweight?). The LC said he is gaining too much weight.

3) Alexander wants to feed every 2 hours. The Nurse said if he is hungry to feed him. The LC said I should push him off to every 2 1/2 hours.

So who should I believe? TIA

Re: Who to believe

  • The LC may be correct about the upset belly, but other than that I disagree with her. He is not gaining too much, and we always fed on demand. I know it's frustrating to get conflicting information-I'm surprised the LC said some of those things!

  • 1) infant poop can be a myriad of different colors and textures and still be considered normal.  Unless it persists, or has a very foul smell to it - I think it's probably normal.

    2) In the first few weeks - babies will adjust to their percentile - whether its at the 75th or the 30th (compared to all babies of that age) but many times you'll see a jump or drop from birth to infancy.  Avery was around the 50th when born - but then dropped to the 30th and stayed there for a while until she turned a year ish and then dropped to the 5th.  Some babies go the opposite direction.  I'm surprised the LC said that he's too heavy - especially if you're just EBFing him.

    3) I think feeding on demand is perfectly fine.  usually thats every 2-3 hours so I think both are correct - it just really depends on what baby needs

  • i agree with pp, infant poop can be all different colors. J's range from mustardy yellow, to a hint of green. i try to look out for signs of discomfort (like him straining to poop), or things like blood, foul smell like sarah mentioned.

he is NOT gaining too much weight. my 3.5 mo old is now over 17lbs. he is EBF. he had doubled his birth weight in about 2 mo. he's happy and healthy. babies gain weight different (and so do adults for that matter). as long as he's happy and healthy i think he's fine.  and i'm surprised that the LC would make you think otherwise.

we feed on demand too. and at the beginning J was hungry every 1.5-2 hrs. during the day now (since he's at daycare and won't take a bottle) he goes longer b/w feedings. but when i get him home at night, he still nurses every 2-2.5 hrs or so. again every baby is different.
