what do you live in? house, apartment?

me and DH are contemplating what to do...we live in downtown chicago in a 1 bedroom apartment.  We defintely are staying in the city, but are debating whether to try and get into a 2 bedroom in a different neighborhood.  I really like where we live now because we have a doorman, in unit laundry, a covered parking garage, elevators, etc.  i'm trying to decide if the extra space outweighs all of the luxuries...our lease is up in March so we have a little while to think about it.

Re: what do you live in? house, apartment?

  • Eventually the two rooms will be a life saver! We live in a house that we bought shortly after dd was born.

When we lived in our two bedroom apartment, she never used her room. She slept with us most of the time, or in a pnp in our room. Now that she's older, she sleeps in her crib in her own room, I couldn't share a room with her any more at her age! I think she'd see me in the middle of the night and just want me because I'm there!

  • We have a 2 bedroom townhouse. It's small but a good amount of space and will be just fine for us and baby. We don't have any plans to move in the near future... maybe if we find something we really like, but we are happy here.
  • We live in a 3bd/2.5bath townhouse, but we're moving out of state before the baby gets here.  We'll be with B/SIL for a little bit until we find a house or apt. we like.

This is just me, but I don't think I'd mind being a 1bdrm for the first 6-9 months because the baby will likely be in your room for part of that anyway.  But when the baby is closing in on 1 year then I think you might want more space.

  • we have a 3 bedroom house with an *almost* finished basement. I think we have too much space, but soon we'll have another baby, so that might change. No one watches my door :(

and we had DS in our room until he was 6 mos old

  • We live in a 2 br apartment and have no plans to move anytime soon.  The 2nd br can comfortable house 2 children.
  • We have a similar situation to you, we are in a one bedroom apartment that we love, its rent controlled, all utilities are paid, secure parking, a front yard and its 4 block to the pacific ocean. We are going to stay as long as we can once the LO arrives.  My friend has a 6 month old baby and they haven't used the 'nursery' once yet. I say stay where you are happy and see how it goes :) GL!

  • We are in a two bedroom apartment, and probably will remain there for a year or two more while we work on paying our debts down. At first, DH did not want any kids until we owned a home, but he finally realized it would be okay to have a child in an apartment for the first few years. Now we really need to work on decluttering and getting rid of stuff to make room for a nursery. The only thing I really wish we had is our own washer and dryer, but we will have to make due with the shared laundry room.

  • We live in a 3br house in the country with lots of land. I have goats for neighbours, literally. They are very sweet and friendly. No food ever goes to waste in my house.  If bread is getting stale or the watermelon, too ripe, to the goats it goes!!

  • Right now we live in a 2 bedroom condo near UIC. However, the neighborhoods around us are a little questionable, so we plan to move into a 1 bedroom + den in the south loop. We definitely want the security of a doorman, the accessibility of living in the loop, etc. Personally, I don't think a nursery needs to be very large and I'd rather have luxuries over space. However, if you think you're going to buy all those baby items on the market, then you may want more space.

I'm in a less than ideal situation, as our lease is not up until June 1st. Additionally, my EDD is a few days after my last final. I was hoping we can get out of our lease early, but either way moving will not be fun. (I will be moving in the late stages of the pregnancy or moving with a newborn). I'm hoping for the impossible-that our landlord will have mercy and let us break our lease in the next few months.

  • Sounds good! I'm not sure how to PM someone (I'm still navigating my way around the site), so send me a message with your contact. I'd love any inside info you have about condos in the south loop. We have a few that's high on the list, but no definite decisions.

We live in the South Loop in a 1 bed plus den and plan on staying here for a while after LO is born. We love this neighborhood and our building, it's so nice!

  • We're in a 3 bedroom (well, I call it 2 and a 1/2) 1 bathroom house. We're in a quaint neighborhood that our neighbor's referred to as Mayberry. While we have plenty of room, most days I wish we had more square footage.

  • We lived in a 1 Bed/1 Bath apartment for a couple months after DD was born (we had sold our townhouse and need some transition housing before we moved to our current house).  At that point, DD was still sleeping in our room so it worked out good.  At about 6 months, when DD started STTN and becoming mobile, it was nice to have the extra space of our new house.

  • We live in a 4 BR, 2.5 BA house.  We just moved into this house after living in a very small 2 BR condo for 6 years.  I don't know if I just got so sick of that condo or if I just love this house, but I love having more space.  We have 3 pets and they even seem so much happier with more space.  I agree that you would probably be fine for the first 6 months or so, but after that you would really wish you had moved.  Also, how much storage do you have?  Babies come with so much stuff...would you have room for it in a 1 BR?

Good luck.  Your place sounds really nice so I'm sure it won't be an easy decision.

  • We live in a 3/2 house but are upgrading to a 4/2.5 within the year hopefully. Our girls (8 and 4.5) share a room now, and our son (6) has his own room. The baby will be in our room for quite some time, but it would be nice to have larger rooms, a nursery/guest room, plus the house we are interested in now has a formal living room, formal dining room, AND a basement that is "almost" finished. But nobody watches our door...and we don't have a garage either. Your place sounds pretty sweet!

You'll be thankful for the additional room when LO starts STTN. I say go for the additional room.

  • Single family home, 3 bedroom and 2 bathrooms. We purchased it 2 years before DD was born and were glad she had her own room to go to when she was old enough.

  • I kept both of my kids in the same room with me until they were about 9/10 months old. So, you could probably get away with it for a while.

  • We live in a house.  I agree with pp that you will want the space.  Sharing a room with an infant and sharing a room with a toddler are two totally different things.  I coudn't imagine sharing with DS.  He needs a quiet room to nap in and go to bed in at 8:00.

  • Right now, we live in a 1 bedroom apartment.  We found out we were pregnant on a Monday 8/30, looked at a house on Wednesday and bought it that Friday.  We've been looking for years (literally), and it's perfect for us. The ILs went to look at it with us and told us to write a check while we were there.   We own the apartment building, and it was great to pay down debt (and have tenants pay the mortgage), it's way past time for a house.  It's a 3/2.5 with a finished basement.

    We close 9/30!

  • We have a three bedroom townhouse. We love it. Lots of room for our little one, and another one after that :)

  • We live in a three bedroom, 1200 square foot apartment. I co-own the building, so it's rent free! We also have a mostly finished basement and tons of storage in the attic. I don't think we will ever move from here.

  • Can you get on a waiting list for you place for a 2bd?
  • We live in a smallish 2bd 1bath apartment. It will be a tight squeeze with three kids, but the rent is so cheap that we probably aren't going anywhere until our debt is all paid off. (Spring 2013!! Yay!!!)
  • We live in a 3 bedroom house.  I'm a bit nervous about the toy situation once the baby becomes toddler age.  We really need to finish our basement so our living room doesn't become toy central!  Our house is rather small (1300 sq feet) and the only rooms on the main floor are the kitchen/dining room and living room.
