Babies: 0 - 3 Months

DS has an umbilical hernia :(

I called the pedi about it today and she said that they usually don't do anything to treat it as long as it is getting good blood flow and not causing any discomfort. She also said that they usually go away on their own, but surgery is an option if it begins to cause problems. It just looks so weird and like it would hurt, that I feel bad. Anyone else have a LO with a hernia?

  • I do, but I'm not worried about it at all.

  • My LO had a right inguinal hernia and he had to have surgery on it right away for fear it was congesting his right testical. It was a quick surgery and he's recovered AMAZINGLY...took him about a day to be back to his normal self. He goes back in December after all the swelling is gone to re-assess the area but thus far everything is good. It was a crappy couple of days seeing LO in the hospital with an IV in :( It is the most common surgery performed in LO's worldwide though, according to DS's surgeon. Good luck and keep an eye on it!

  • Yup, I was concerned at first but it's no longer an issue.  Pedi said it's fine, it'll fix itself and in the meantime she just looks like she's a half outie, half innie.

  • DS had one and it was really big.  It finally went away.  He now has some saggy skin around the belly button area.  Push it in every time you change his diaper and this will help it go away on it's own.

  • All 3 of my boys have/had one.  They all cleared up on their own.  DS1 has an outtie I don't know if it is because of that or not but other than that there have been no problems from them.

  • DD had one, but it has already gone away!  They are no big deal.

  • I was adopted at about 3-4 months, and apparently my mom was calling my pedi constantly bc I had one... he told her that it was fine, I was perfectly normal and healthy, and to leave it alone. It's just fine now! lol...

  • Yes, my LO has a huge one. And it will get worse before it gets better... Don't be afraid to push it back in to make sure that he's not getting gas bubbles trapped in there, I normally check my LOs once or twice a day. At its worse it stuck out about an inch or more and I was so freaked out, now it only sticks out maybe a 1/4 inch and its getting better every day.

Same with DS. Our pedi said they generally resolve within a year.
