Private vs shared rooms

My hospital has a mix of private and shared rooms, and you are given the option of paying for a private room is one is available (this is when only a few rooms are available). We are definitely going to pay extra if the private rooms are available. What are you ladies planning on doing?

Re: Private vs shared rooms

  • I had a private room when I had ds.  I can't imagine sharing a room with another mother and a nb and all the visitors!  I don't think our hospital has shared rooms so I'm not too concerned.

  • Private all the way!

My bff had a completely detached mom in with her who slept with earphones in and did not wake for her screaming child once. (Hello? Send it down to the nursery then?!) She had to keep buzzing the nurses to get her to wake the hell up! Yikes! I would probably throw things...definitely best if I am on my own! lol

  • Our hospital only has private rooms, thankfully.
  • Our hospital only offers private rooms, thank goodness! They maternity ward was redone a few years ago and is absolutely stunning. I'm so thankful that it's the nearest hospital to our house!.
  • My hospital has only private "birthing suites"... though the other hospital I had the option of delivering at has private rooms as well, the people at the hospital I chose are much nicer and the facilities are newer. My mom told me a story about when she had my brother and shared a room with 3 other women (1989 in Michigan and she was on Medicaid) and how traumatizing it was... I could never share a room with someone else like that.

  • i think shared recovery rooms or whatever they are called are pretty common at military hospitals i know the one near me you dont have the option of a private room. unless the hospital is empty. which rarely happens. but the birthing rooms are private thank god.

i however am not going to the military hospital because of the shared rooms, and the fact that husbands cant stay over night. among other things i dont like about them.

  • I believe that our hospital only has private rooms, but if we had the option & insurance would still pay, we'd totally do a private room.

  • My hospital only has private rooms, so it's not an issue for us. But if I was in a situation where there were shared and private rooms, I would pay extra for private.
  • My hospital only offers private rooms. If I was given the option I would definitively pay for the private room.

     Ditto.

I don't think I could handle having to share a recovery room with someone else and have family coming in and out all the time.

  • Private.

Beyond the flow of humanity from both sets of visitors while I'm exposing my boobs and trying to learn how to breastfeed, the idea of waking up all night with TWO kids once an hour?  I'd probably drink bleach.

  • Our hospital has nothing but birthing suites.  So its all done in your suite!  No sharing of rooms, thanks goodness!
  • I was moved into a shared room after giving birth to DS. It was hell. I was tired and emotional and all of my roommates 10 family members were standing near our one bathroom and I was embarrassed to get up and go in fear I might bleed on the ground (you bleed a lot afterwords). I was crying and my husband went and talked to a nurse and they moved us to a private room. They weren't really suppose to but they had merci on me. I was beyond thankful!

Now we have a brand new delivery hospital and all room's are now private suites! I can't wait to deliver at our new hospital. It's so nice! But to answer your question, YES I would pay for a private room if it wasent the norm!

This. I'm glad too, I really don't like the idea of shared space with strangers.

  • Both hospitals I've delivered at have only had private rooms, THANK GOODNESS. I remember when my sister had my niece 15 years ago and she had a shared room, it was horrible. If I had to, I would pay.

  • I don't think our hospital has shared rooms, they just redid everything and put in some really nice birthing suites.
