Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 mo appt and weight is still an issue

DS had his 15 mo appt this morning and he lost about 5 oz from his 12 mo appt. He weighed in at 20.5 which put him in the 5th percentile for weight. We have a script to do a full blood mark up to check thyroid and other things. We go back in 6 weeks for a weight check.

The doc said I'm doing everything right with the foods I'm offering and how I'm offering them. I just have an extremely picky eater on my hands. I can't force him to eat. I don't know what else to do.

Re: 15 mo appt and weight is still an issue

  • My lo has been underweight since birth so I know exactly how you feel. Have you tried giving him a pedisure daily? My pedi referred us to a specialist for some testing at our 15mo appt. I asked him if there was any other options bc I knew it was bc he's so active and a picky eater. He told us to give a pedisure a day and come back in a month. When we went back he gained and my pedi was happy. Also, what are the things he likes to eat? You can add stuff to it to try to get him to gain.

  • Did he grow taller though?

DD weighed in at about 20lbs. at her 18 month appt the other day, and has consistently been in the 5-10th percentile.  Has he always been in a lower weight percentile, or is he falling at every appt?

He's been progressively dropping down in % since birth. He gained less then 1lb from 6-9 mo and we went in for a weight check 6 weeks after that and he had gained 1lb at that point and then another 1lb by 12 mo so the doc was happy with that. I'm not sure if he grew at all between 12-15 mo. I think he stayed the same for height but his head did grow. Developmentally he's starting to talk and has been walking for about a month and seems to be developing just fine.

No pedisure yet. I asked the doc if his blood work comes back fine but he still hasn't gained in 6 weeks, then what and she said at that point they'll focus on how to get more calories into his diet at that point.

He does great with breakfast 1/2-1 banana and either 1/2 or whole waffle/french toast sticks/pancakes. The rest of the days it's just crackers and fruit. He hasn't come around to any protein although I offer it to him at lunch and dinner and no veggies yet. He's slowly coming around to pasta but it's still hit or miss. I eat with him, try offering him new things, and he pokes at food on his highchair and then promptly throws it off and if I tried to feed him a bite of something I get a hand to my face and a turned head with a mouth clamped shut. He's just not interested.

I see, I hope it gets better for you.  what about mac and cheese that is my lo's favorite, he'd live off it if I let him?

We did the Carnation packets because of DD's weight gain. She finally seems to be gaining on her own now and we backed off feeding her the packets. Have you tried smoothies with him? We add in a few cubes of frozen veggie puree to ours. You don't event taste them and it is a great way to get some veggie, full fat yogurt and fruits into LO.

  • DD is a preemie and never really been on the growth chart.  At her 12mo appt. she finally hit the chart for height and head size but still not weight.  We add butter to everything, and she does love ice cream so we try to give that to her every night.  She's just a long and skinny string bean Smile

  • The weight issues seem never-ending here too. Sorry, I know how frustrating it can be. They really bump up their activity levels at this age so that accounts for some of it.
  • DD was born ~60th percentile and has steadily dropped to ~10th percentile. We haven?t weighed her since her 12 mo apt (our doc doesn?t do 15 mo apts), but she?s probably about 20.5 lbs now, too. Honestly, I don?t worry about it because she is developing normally, happy and healthy. She's very active and learns quickly. Also, our doctor pointed out that the CDC growth charts are based on formula-fed babies, but BF babies have a wider range (and DD is ~20th percentile on the WHO growth charts, which are based on BF babies). Neither DH nor I are very big (although we were both bigger at the same age), so it doesn?t strike me as strange that DD is small. She knows the sign for ?eat,? ?more,? and a couple of foods and is good about letting us know when she?s hungry and when she?s not, so I don?t push food on her.

  • My peanut is behind you guys, but pretty much the same. He was 17lbs, 8oz at 12 months, so there's no way he will gain 3 lbs in 3 months. He also only gained about a lb every 3 months since 6ish.

Our pedi is not too concerned at this point...she offered for us to speak to a nutritionist but didn't force it, and did not req. a 15 month appt, so I'm assuming that means she thinks he's fine but that we need to work on fattening him up.

This is the second time I've seen Carnation on here...we might try that. We're doing the toddler formula instead of milk twice a day, he still nurses AM and bed but probably only gets about 6 oz total from that. Our pedi suggested Pediasure but it's just extra sugar so I'm kind of hesitant.

I would just keep trying different things and try (I know how hard it is) to not get frustrated. We try to keep mealtime as light and fun as possible...feed each other and then see if he'll take a bite after us, etc. If he's eating, we ignore him and talk to each other like normal. He seems to lose complete focus once we start interacting.

Good luck...mother's instinct accounts for a lot. I try not to get too worked up b/c I know he's healthy and hitting every milestone but weight.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
