Poll: Do you wear shoes in your house?

Re: Poll: Do you wear shoes in your house?

  • Nope. It's a cultural thing- no one here wears shoes in the house and I am uncomfortable when people ask me to keep mine on.

  • I live in TX. No one wears shoes in the house and everyone around here even takes off their shoes when they go into someone elses home. We live in a new area, and everyone has newer homes, newer carpet and little kids. None of us want to track dirt and germs into someone elses home from outside.

It is better for your feet not to wear shoes. I say take em off ASAP!

  • We do not wear shoes inside.  Nobody does.  When you go to visit someone, the instinct is to take off your shoes unless instructed otherwise.

It's one of the first rules the kids learn at daycare.

It is very regional and very expected here to remove your shoes when entering a home.

My floors stay very clean because of it.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Nope--it's just yucky! We have a dog too, but shoes are dirtier I think especially in the winter with the salt and all that crap. BUT, the funny thing is that MY parents and IL's both want to wear their shoes inside my house and they get all offended when I asked them to take off their shoes at MY house.

  • At this point in time we do wear our shoes in the house, but when we move we will stop wearing them in the house. Right now we wear them in the house because we have a small apartment with two dogs, and they track in dirt and mud anyways. We also do not have a child yet, just started ttc in July :)
  • Nope. Neither do my family and the majority of my friends. The same goes for DH and his fam and friends.

We always take them off by the door and swap them for houseshoes, and have extra slippers for guests.

I sometimes hear about people being shy about asking, but I?ve never had a problem. Have even provided stinky feet guys with a towel and a clean pair of socks + a quick wash up in the bathroom (though, like i said. its normal in our environments to not wear shoes indoors.)

It?s like sitting in the bed with clothes you wore outside. yuck!

  • I wear shoes in the house because I have flat feet and it's more comfortable for me, plus my feet get cold. I have all tile in my house anyway, we have a dog, and the Roomba picks up whatever we track in.

I feel VERY uncomfortable taking shoes off at other people's houses, especially if I am wearing shoes without socks. I am really self-conscious about my feet because I have eczema and other foot issues and I don't like people seeing my feet. I hate being asked to remove my shoes!

  • I never wear shoes in the house. I was raised that way and Dan wasnt. It is a constant battle between us.  I feel it is resectful to remove shoes when entering someones home.
  • We take off our shoes right when we walk in the door. My brother in law and husband actually take off their shoes right BEFORE they walk inside. We want our son to be able to walk around and not worry about things that we track in from outside.
  • NEVER!!  My little girl is always on the floor, dropping food, then picking it back up and eating it... I don't let anyone wear shoes in my house because it's easier to keep your house clean, but most importantly because I think it's disgusting to let your baby sit in the dirt someone dragged in... my baby can play outside in the dirt, but when she is inside, I take pride and comfort in knowing she is able to sit, play and eat in a clean environment...

We do not wear shoes in the house generally and try not to walk around too much after getting home before taking them off. We will walk through with groceries or something when your hands are full and can't take off your shoes right away but in general we do not wear shoes inside. This was before DS was born even and we have wood floors where you come inside, so dirt and everything gets tracked on the floor and it's a pain to have to sweep it up all the time. I have putting DS on the floor where we don't have carpet because it seems dirtier to me for some reason... We do have cats and they get litter all over the place, which drives me insane. DH vacuums very frequently though, usually about every other day.

I HATE when we have guests over and they don't take off their shoes and I have a hard time asking them to-- but it drives me insane. They notice we take our shoes off but they walk all over our clean floors with their shoes.. grr..

We have virtually the same situation! (And horray to our DH for taking that chore!) I want to tell you that we had regular cat litter for our two cats and it was horrible having it all over the house. When LO started crawling we switched to Feline Pine (the original, not the clumping stuff because that got all over the house too) and the special litter box you get on the website and it is still cheaper for us and the pellets aren't all over the house like the clay was (and even if they were its a lot safer!). I know I sound like a commercial, but it changed our house so much!

I take my shoes off at other people's houses because it is absolutely mortifying to me to track dirt into a place and not be able to pick up after myself. At home I do it because if I leave them on I will eventually take them off in the living room and the baby will try to eat them which is gross. I never really thought about the public bathroom germs and such, but that's a great reason. I am not worried about normal dust and dirt, that's natural. I wear socks because the floors some places are cold.

I used to wear crocs, but they are like boats and caused me to fall down a flight of stairs when I was 8 months pregnant and I will never wear them again even though they are comfortable, it just isn't worth the physical therapy and best rest I had to undergo! Even when I did I had to wear socks with them, they made my feet sweat so horribly.. unlike most shoes.

I am lucky that generally my guests see that I take my shoes off and do the same - we have a mat for their shoes to go on so they don't have to ask where to put them (the shoe rack we use is generally full). If they don't take there shoes off or do after we pass the mud room (which is baby-gated) I don't say anything, or ask if it's okay if I move their shoes where the baby can't get into them.

Absolutely, but after having hard floors and realizing how disgusting carpet is, we'll never have it again.

That said, we don't wear shoes around the house at all anyway, just more comfy not to.  But we don't ask guests to take their shoes off.  That's just rude IMO.  It's a floor, meant for walking on.  I make sure it's clean when they leave.

I agree, I think it's rude to ask guests to take their shoes off.  If you don't want to wear shoes in your home, that's fine, but I get cold when I don't wear shoes.  Shouldn't your guests' comfort come before your carpet?

  • Shoes stay by the front door to slip on/off when going or coming.  Not really because of dirt, or anything, but we just prefer barefoot!  As much as I love cute shoes, I much prefer to let my feet be free around the house.
  • We don't. I was explaining it to my mom the other day and she totally thought it was ridiculous but whatever. I don't want all that dirt and bacteria on my feet or on our LO's hands feet or in his or her mouth.
  • >> Plus, your carpets and flooring stay looking new forever if you don't wear shoes in your home.

Unless you live with my husband who spills tea and wine on the carpet, LOL.  We wear shoes in the house all the time.  It's a great thought to take them off to keep the floors clean, but the dog will just drag stuff in, so I'm not sure that would work for us anyway.

We have friends that have a no-shoe policy, and they just say, when you come in the door, "... and you can put your shoes over there."  That means, take your shoes off.  And we have no problem doing that (except the one time when my Halloween outfit was not as cool when I couldn't wear my shoes, LOL).

However, if you ask people to take their shoes off, your floors should be spotless so they don't get crap stuck to the bottom of their bare feet.

Who else has experience with the Roomba?  Do they really work, and do they work on carpet?  I think my dog would attack it.

  • No we never wear shoes in our house, shoes come off first thing by mat by either front or back door, just comfy in socks, and carpets stay cleaner.
