Stupid Decorating Question

Sooo. I am really OCD about matching. Will it look really bad decorating for fall with fall colors if they will totally clash with the decor in my house? Take my mantle for instance. I would love to decorate it with leaves and pumpkins etc. but my living room is a bluish/greenish color and our rug is shades of brown, blues, greens and grays.  Red and orange against that color of wall will look terrible. At least it does in my mind! What do you do if theme decorations don't match or go with your general decor? Just decorate anyway?

Re: Stupid Decorating Question

  • Hmmm, how would a burgundy shade look with those colors?  The way I visualize it, it wouldn't clash like red or orange would.  I don't really think of red as a fall color, but that might just b/c I'm not a big fan of true red in decorating.

I'd rather have the burnt red color (which is more like burgundy).  But I don't know exactly what shade the colors are in your house.  My living room is accented in blue, green, and cream and the fall colors look fine.

  • I think you could probably stick closer to creams, browns, and tans - like pine cones, acorns, white instead of orange pumpkins, very dark orange leaves, etc... I don't like my holiday decor to clash with my house either!

this is pretty, fall-inspired, and not orange:

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Check out the Pottery Barn catalog or website. They do a lot of decorating with these colors so that might give you some ideas.
