Parenting after a Loss

Reflux

Lately Logan has been spitting up a lot more than he had been.  I basically chalked the spit up to "being a baby", but I have been concerned about this gagging (almost choking) thing that he has been doing over the past week or so.  It sounds like he is trying to swallow something, but can't, and then he ends up coughing.  I called the pedi to make an appointment to talk to the doctor about it.  They made my appointment for Friday, but also suggested I talk to the triage nurse.  When the triage nurse called me back, she said it sounds like reflux and I should come in right away, so we have an appointment in an hour.  Yikes, I was not expecting that.

Now that I'm reading about it... I'm wondering if the hiccup/burps I posted about earlier are also related.....

Anyone have any experience with reflux?

Re: Reflux

  • from what i understand, this is a tough thing to call. to some extent, i think all babies that spit up technically have "reflux." the problem is when the reflux is excessive and accompanies "heartburn" in infants (making it painful reflux) or the spitting up is so copiouos, it results in the baby losing weight.

my little one spits up a lot. she doesn't exhibit the classical "painful" signs of reflux like arching her back and crying during meals or anything like that, but she seems to have some reflux symptoms. she was put on zantac but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

how often is your little one gagging?

  • J has reflux issues and takes prevacid for it. He gets the hiccups at least 2 times a day and sometimes more. I have also read that it is linked to reflux. His spitting up is more than what I would think is normal baby spit up. Most of the time it's projectile and a few times it has also come out of his nose! Sometimes he screams when it happens, like its hurting him or painful. He is hard to soothe when it happens. I feel so bad for him. We decides to see this weekend if we really thought he has reflux and he really needed the meds and we didn't give it to him. He has been choking and coughing at almost every feeding. Sounds kinda like what your LO has been doing too. We are def going back on the meds. I think it would be good to take your LO in and just see what the pedi has to say! Hope you get some answers!
