P4 test on 3DPO

My dr's office just called to confirm that my P4 test is on 9/15 (3DPO) and first beta will be 9/26. Anyone else's RE ask them to come in on 3DPO to test progesterone levels? From what I gather on this board...this is not the norm.

And I have to admit...last IUI, by 3DPO, because of my P4 test results...I had already lost most hope.

Re: P4 test on 3DPO

  • No, that's weird.  Why would they do that?  They won't get an accurate reading - P4 peaks around 7dpo.  Your number is bound to come back low at 3dpo.

    Agreed.

  • Hi, Gym:  I know..It's weird. And even though I realize they probably are taking some kind of precautionary measure...it becomes such a 2WW spoiler to see my P4 level so early on. I'm going to ask them when I go in on Wed.

If they insist on the 3dpo, I would DEFINITELY not read anything into it if it's low!

  • My RE does it just to confirm ovulation during TI or IUI cycles.  You really can't determine anything from the results other than that.

  • Thanks, ladies! Reading what you've said helps me understand possible reasons for the 3DPO check...but also gives me confidence to ask for another check at 7DPO.

  • My RE's office does this.  They like to see your level at or above 10 (from what they've told me) and mine has been 15/16 the times I've had it checked.  Their explanation for it is that if it comes back low they can put you on progesterone as a precautionary measure instead of waiting until a week after ovulation (where there's a chance that it might be "too late" to fix a possible pregnancy--egg is fertilized but progesterone isn't high enough to sustain it).

Those aren't the dr's words...I am paraphrasing...So if that doesn't sound as medically accurate as it should be that's why!  lol...
