XP: Pacifers?

I've don't post on this board a lot, but was curious what you ladies thoughts about pacifiers. My LO is almost 3 weeks and LOVES to suck. All the time. She is breastfeeding exclusively and doing a good job at it. My pediatrician suggested a paci, but I've heard it's best to wait till their older, if at all. I appreciate your thoughts and opinions.  Thanks

  • We use a Wubanub. Can't get through a day without it.

  • we have used the avent since day 1 and he loves it. No nipple confusion
  • My DD started on her paci I think at just a few days old and she didn't have any issues with nipple confusion or anything.

  • We used one in the hospital, then stopped once we left because we were having major latch issues.  I'm not sure the paci caused it but you never know.  We tried to reintroduce once BFing was more established and now he won't take one.  If everything is going well for you BFing wise I say go for it.  Because if you wait, there's a chance she'll refuse it.

  • I have used mine since the day she was born. If she doesn't want it she spits it out.
  • I avoided it for a while, since we were having some latch issues.

But in the last few weeks we've reintroduced it. She's started showing a pretty good need to suck, so we just give her the soothie we brought home from the hospital if she needs it. She doesn't get it too often -- we're trying to keep it from becoming a habit and it's usually only if everything else has failed.

ditto this except exchange wubanub for pacimals :-)

  • So far Soothies are the only ones DS likes.  He's been using them since week 1 with no problem.  If he didn't get the pacifier, he'd be sucking on his fingers, so we give him the paci when he wants it.
  • We used a paci from day 2, because his first night he was using me as a pacifier, lol.  He always wanted to suck, but did not want to take the paci.  He was picky and insisted on sucking on one of our pinky fingers instead!  We were persistant about giving him the paci instead though, because our finger is not always the most convenient or clean thing around!  Nowadays, he likes his paci and doesn't want our finger at all anymore.  :)  BTW, EBF and no nipple confusion ever.

  • We gave DS one in the hospital because he was using me as a pacifier. Now he sucks on his hands when he wants to suck on something so we kept with the pacifier. We figured it was easier to take a pacifier away from him when he is older than his hand or his thumb. No problems with nipple confusion.

  • We started using a paci the second day when she failed her hearing test.  The great thing about a paci is that you can always take it away if it interferes with BF.  LO has always had a great latch and we have had no problems.  Now it is awesome because it really helps her calm down when she gets overstimulated and helps her sleep when she is overtired.  Plus I was a thumbsucker and ended up having jaw surgery because it messed up the shape of my mouth.  I would much rather have my child use a paci than suck her thumb like I did.
