2nd Trimester

So, flame me...

I had my first glass of wine (since finding out KU) tonight with dinner, and OMG...it was soooo good.

Now I'm just hoping LO isn't born with 15 fingers. Stick out tongue

  • haha. they drink a glass of wine with dinner a few times a week while pregnant in europe. i think you'll be fine.
  • Not something I would risk. The brain isnt completely done forming until 3rd trimester. Your baby may look ok physically but could be at risk for learning problems if you continue to drink.

  • Um...if your LO is going to be born with 15 fingers from 1 glass of wine then I guess my LO will have 2 heads, 15 fingers on each hand and 9 toes on each foot from my total of 3 glasses of wine this pregnancy, occassional lunchmeant and coffee.

  • Im so jealous. I would totally do that in a heartbeat if I wasnt so scared it might hurt the baby!

  • OMG!! I can not believe that you would have a glass of wine while pregnant! Do you have any idea what that could do to your child. You may have just ruined everything. ugggggh. j/k

Congrats!! I bet it was fantastic!!! I bet you'll be fine. Make it a bottle or 2 a day and you might have some issues. LOL!

theoretically is the brain ever done forming?

but the risk of going insane because you're craving a glass of wine is a very real risk as well..

Not until you're at least 25 years old - that's when the frontal lobe development is considered to be complete.

OP - one glass of wine occasionally isn't going to hurt anything.  A bottle of wine a day, on the other hand, might... LOL.

I have no learning issues and my mom drank through out her pregnancy with me. I think as long as your not getting hammered a glass or two here and there is fine.

  • No flames here.  Now that Ob said I'm ok to have a glass of wine H and I are going to go out to dinner so I can really enjoy it.  My mom's ob who was also her boss and a top OB told her that a glass was ok when she was pregnant.

So relax and enjoy that glass it's not like you are talking about having a bottle or two.

  • It was ONE glass. May I have another before LO is born? Possibly. Do I have a drinking problem? Not at all. I even asked my OB about it several weeks ago, and he told me it was fine if in moderation. I think I'll take his word for it.

  • I completly agree with the fast food comment. In fact, a lot of the food most people eat is probably much more harmful than a glass of wine. The chemicals, hormones, and pesticides are frightening.

OP- good for you. I don't think that your lonely glass of wine will harm your baby.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.

its kinda like hot tubs... if used in moderation to calm the nerves of the mother or prevent her from murdering the childs father before he/she enters this world... probably a good thing haha

  • The problem with alcohol that makes it so much more damaging than any other substance for pregnant women (even more than illegal drugs) is that it passes the blood-brain barrier in the fetus. Alcohol is a neurotoxin and every impact with the brain causes cell damage --even in adults (we are just lucky to have plenty of extras). A developing baby doesn't have that advantage so continual exposure to alcohol means continued brain damage.

One glass of wine probably won't do too much damage, but it's always a risk.

By the way, fast food is only really toxic to the mother.

so, so true.  unless you are eating, like, 100% healthy and organic and avoiding any and all chemicals you really can't even begin to judge someone for having ONE glass of wine.

Sometimes I make kraft mac and cheese and I add a can of tuna.  Then sometimes I'll also add green beans or peas.  It's like a tuna noodle casserole...maybe not.  But my sister loves it when I make it.

OP if your doctor says yes... it's your call people are always going to give you their opinion if you ask for it.  Me, I'm getting heartburn just thinking about the heartburn I got from a shot glass worth of red wine the other night.  I'm going to avoid it because I have bad heartburn anyway so I can't deal.  Good Luck

My tuna noodle casserole is basically that, but I add a can of mushroom soup and use some of the cheese in the dish and sprinkle the rest on top. My DS loves it!

A glass of wine never hurt a baby. if you enjoy it mama, go for it. no flames here.  I rarely drink, but if I feel so inclined to do so while PG I'll go right ahead.

  • I was never a real big wine drinker....so can I substitute a glass of wine with a bottle of Guinness?  OH HOW I CRAVE BEER.....My husband and I were calculating last night and it will be almost a year before I can drink beer....I almost cried.

I am not looking to flame anyone for having one drink if they so wish.

But THIS I hate, because your reasoning holds on the fact that your asking someone to know a study and reference off by heart, or you think it is big lie?  That's stupid.  https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/974016-overview  this article was just an easy find that actually references 25 resources refering to FAS.

I have known children with FAS, and yes, their mothers likely drank large amounts, but they had the same defense, tell me a study that says otherwise, and then didn't listen after that, because they didn't want to hear it.

Seriously, I doubt one drink is gonna make any difference, but don't deny alcohol has any effect.

  • So, not that I condone, or would participate in drinking now... but I thought I'd let you know, my mother did drugs and drank until she was five months pregnant with me and then went on to only eat Jim Dandy Sundaes for the next four months and I turned out to be a normal, straight A student, just a tad on the pudgy size. Doesn't happen all the time, but it can happen. Hurray for your bravery, and I've been hearing alchohol does the most damage before you hit 3 months! So here is hoping for the best for you!
  • I've read some recent studies stating that the antioxidants in red wine can actually help. ?A GLASS OR TWO A WEEK ONLY! ?But it was said to increase cognitive thinking in the child and higher test scores too! This also goes for A BEER or so a week....Not a six pack. So, keep it in small quantities, and enjoy! Baby's brain will thank you later apparently!

I read somewhere (I'm trying to find where) that while pregnant you can drink 1 - 1.5n units of wine or a lager once a day.  I'd limit it a little more, but yeah, if I can remember where it was, I'll let you know!!  Has to be a lager though.  :)

As for the drinking thing....having an occasional drink won't hurt anything.  The reason you hear so much about "drinking is bad while pregnant" is because we (United States) live in a country where too many people would hear "I can get drunk while pregnant" if their DR says "you can have wine/lager while pregnant"  One glass on occasion is acceptable.  Drinking until you're fall down drunk & stupid, not so much.

No one said anything about alcohol having no effect. Everyone here pretty much agreed that ONE glass wasn't going to do any harm.

Did you even read the post? Even the one you quoted says the same thing as the others... Two words: Reading comprehension.

This is so true. We definitely have a skewed notion of drinking in this country (i.e. you drink to get drunk or you need to drink in order to have fun). My IL's live in Italy, and the occasional glass of wine while pregnant is acceptable.

  • I have enjoyed a few glasses of wine (one at a time!) so far this pg. Ditto everyone else about it being fine and the benefits. One thing I didn't see mentioned was some research that showed the children of mothers who drank moderately in pg were better behaved as infants and small children.

ETA: it has something to do with the stress hormones in pg affecting child development and the stress reducing benefits of a glass of wine in pg. If a glass of wine makes you happy, helps you relax and helps you sleep, go for it.
