Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BFers

Do you nurse on both sides at each feeding or just on one? Her feedings have gotten pretty short (she's done after about 7 minutes on each side) and I'm wondering if this means she isn't getting enough hindmilk. She's also really fussy whenever she feeds on my right boob for some reason. Also, whenever I pump I get 3-4 oz max total, and I feel like it's not very much. She is still 75th percentile for weight/height as of her last appt at 2 months so perhaps there's no need to be concerned?

Re: BFers

  • No, LO only feeds from both sides in the afternoon/early evening when my supply is lower.  In the middle of the night she eats from one side and passes back out and her first feed in the morning I pump from one side while she feeds on the other.  I only get 3-4 oz too when I pump.

  • DS is in the 92nd percentile and only eats off of one.  He must be getting the hindmilk!
  • We nurse on both sides, but hey, have you tried "double feeding"?--Nursing on left, right, left, right? Not only will it increase supply but it'll ensure LO gets enough hindmilk. If you're unsure, try pumping for 15 minutes after she's done :) -advice from my LC
  • DS is 99 percentile- he eats off both.

I pump anywhere from 4 to 7 oz

  • LO varies. Sometimes she wants both, sometimes just one. She used to always want both, but it has dropped down to one or the other except for 2-3 sessions a day (out of 8-9). Maybe your LO has just gotten more efficient at nursing so he doesn't need to be on as long.

  • I usually nurse on both sides during the day, but overnight an in the early morning, he'll only take one side.  If she wasn't getting enough hindmilk, her poops would turn green and she would be gassy and upset.  She probably fusses on the right because she doesn't like lying that way for some reason.  If she's gaining weight and has the right number of wet and dirty diapers, she's fine.
  • We are about the same here. 5-7 minutes, each side, gets a bit fussy if I stop, but will stop on her own. When I pump I get 3-4 oz total from both sides. Her 2 mo. appt. isn't until next Friday so we'll have to see...
  • Usually in the morning and at night LO nurses on both sides.  Lately I have noticed that during the day he has only wanted to nurse on one side at a time.  Sometimes he'll want both, sometimes just one.

My DS only eats from one side and only eats for about 10 to 12 min.  His poops are green (have been for weeks).  His Pedi says this is totally fine.  He is also gaining plenty of weight and has the right number of wet diapers.

  • My LO pretty much only eats off one side too.  He eats anywhere from 10-25 min per feeding.  I have noticed too that he is fussier when he eats off the right side, I'm thinking it may be because my let down is too fast for him on that side.  He is doing well and gaining weight.  I have started feeding him off the left and pumping the right side- we'll see how he does.
  • I generally feed from one side only right now. Sometimes if she's really fussy nursing on one side, then I switch her, but only after she nurses on that first side for a while.

Your baby will get more from you than the pump, so I would guess she's getting more than 2oz each time. As long as she's gaining weight and staying on her weight curve, I wouldn't worry.

  • My LO only eats off of one side and generally only eats for 7-10 minutes. He's in the 95% so I know he's getting pleanty.
