~~Low Supply Check-In~~

This is a weekly check in where ladies who are dealing with a low supply of breastmilk can share their successes and get support for their challenges and difficult days.

If you are looking for supply boosting ideas here is a link to a great post that JenniferJaneC posted rating all of the supply boosters she has tried. Here is a recipe for lactation cookies and here is a recipe for lactation banana bread.

Here is the link to the Motherlove webpage. They are the makers of More Milk Plus and More Milk Special Blend. There is also a store locator on their site so you can find the closest place to you to buy it.

How are you doing this week ladies?

Re: ~~Low Supply Check-In~~

  • I have issues on and off and since LO has been eating dinner, even more so! I spoke to an LC and she told me to have my MIL feed him solids during the day so that when I am home he is getting his max amount of BM so that when I pump at work my supply should increase.

LO hasnt eaten dinner with us all week and its helping! I am still lower supplied than I would like but DS now doesnt need 3 whole bottles, just one whole and 2 half or so for after his meals!

  • I agreed to take over the check-ins from Deltagirl for selfish reasons.  I have BF Ella for 7 months now, and I really feel like if BFing is a marathon, them I am hitting my wall.
My supply has been slowly dropping for the past two weeks, and nothing that I do has seemed to make a difference, drinking bucketloads of water eating oatmeal with flaxseed and brewers yeast twice a day.  I've taken Fenugreek in the past and noticed a small difference.
So, my hope is that in being accountable for this check-in I will make an effort to do whatever it takes to keep BFing and up my supply.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • we are still working at it, Samantha now doesnt want to latch at all. :( still no output into the pump, and i order an SNS to see if that will help, hopefully if shes getting something (so she thinks) from the breast she will then stimulate my milk supply. i will be happy if she goes back but the sns and the domperidone  is my last leg after i try this and it doesnt work ill call defeat!
  • Ugh, I started back at work a couple weeks ago and I can never make enough for the next days daycare. We were previously giving her one bottle a day of formula ( and went on a few week long stints of no formula - woohoo!). But now I'm again losing the minor strides I had made and am Closer to two formula bottles a day. I EP and probably get in 6 sessions a day, sometimes 7. Not sure what to do- I can't add anymore (only time would be middle of night) cause I'm already exhausted all the time Not sure how I can keep this up
  • Hi. Well, I gave up nursing for EPing this past week. It was just too much- going back to work, pumping, nursing, supplementing, etc. I also had to go off Domperidone because it aggravated my Ulcerative Colitis. Sooo, now I'm EPing, which is yielding enough for about half of her feedings, supplementing the rest, taking More Milk Plus, drinking Mother's Milk tea, eating oatmeal, and visualizing more milk in my pumping bottles. LOL. When will this get easier? I'm really struggling. :(
  • We gave up nursing for EPing last week, too, and it took some of the mental pressure off. Danielle, do you have a hospital grade pump? I got a lactina a month ago and it has made a world of difference. Sometimes we can go three days with no formula, just BM bottles, its awesome. DD will be 2 months on Sunday, and I am proud we made it this far. I pump 10x/day, including once in the middle of the night. I quit an online grad program to have more time for pumping because I want DD to have BM that bad, and its worth it.

Oh my gosh, you just brought tears to my eyes. I will think of you whenever I get down. Talk about dedication- that's amazing. I agree with you that it's 100% worth it. Pumping has become my life, but I get such joy each time I get to feed Violet my milk.

No, I don't have a hospital-grade pump. I've been using the PISA. You think it's worth it to switch? I'll talk to my lac. consultant about getting one. Hopefully insurance will cover it.

  • I don't know how you ladies do it.  I was pumping with a hospital pump as much as I could, now I took the pump back and use mine whenever I have time (which isn't often- maybe 3 times a day).  I ussually give 1-2 4oz bottles of formula a day, plus whatever I pump.  I take domperidone and drink the tea and eat oatmeal.  Fingers crossed- things continue where i just need to add 1-2 bottkes..
  • I think I've hit a ceiling with my production, and I'm having to give about 6 oz formula/day. (Although, one day we only gave an ounce!)?

We just had our four month check-up and the I pedi was very impressed that we are still at. ?She has more than doubled her birth weight -- and that's mostly on my milk Yeah!

I ?would suggest to ladies who are struggling to pump enough to try breast compression when you pump. Dr. Jack Newman has some info on his web site. It has really helped me get enough for her daycare bottles.

First thanks Glasgow_girl for taking over. I really hope it helps you as much as it helped me.

Second, for you and the other ladies. I don't know if you've tried it yet but power pumping was one of the few things that really helped me with bringing up my supply. Especially for ladies with a little older babies who are going to bed and sleeping for a longer chunk of time, getting a power pump hour in each night can be really helpful. I found it really helpful when I went back to work too. If you can do it everynight or every other night it will do the most to stimulate your production. Working moms if you can just get one session in on the weekends it can help too.

The other thing that worked for me was the More Milk Plus. The liquid form was better for me, I put it in 1 oz of cranberry juice and did it like a shot. One of the ladies LC told her that the cranberry juice helped it to absorb, I liked it because it covered up a lot of the terrible taste Wink

Good luck ladies!! You are all doing so great and remember that ANY breastmilk you give LO is better than none!

  • Thanks!! I'm just proud of myself for managing all those links! Your instructions were spot on!  I've got myself hooked up with a little store near where I work to get some MMP, and I spoke to the owner on the phone, she had some great advice, and we talked for a little while about a course of action - made me feel a lot better!

  • Increased to the maximum dosage of domperidone about two weeks ago after reaching a plateau with my previous dosage, and have gained about 1-2 oz a day.  If I have oatmeal for breakfast, I get two more oz.  So, I'm gonna stick with oatmeal for breakfast for a week, see if I can get even more.

On average, I get 7 oz a day, and with the oatmeal I get 9.  Our cans of formula are now lasting 1.5-2 weeks instead of barely 1 week - amazing the difference that two feedings of breastmilk a day makes!  Now, if only RL would latch on again, I could get so much more...  Oh, and she turned 6 months old today.

  • I am going to try to check in from now on.

LO is still not latching so I am pumping after every feeding, even the night ones.  I am only getting a total of an Oz at each pumping.  Right now he is getting 3-4 bottles of BM a day and the rest in formula.

I am ordering some Domperidone this weekend and I am really hoping that will help.  I have tried the fenugreek and oatmeal and that does not seem to make a difference.

But even if the Domperidone does not work I am going to continue during what we are doing until DS is a year.  This is the same thig I had to do with DS2 except he latched.

  • Well, this was a very good week compared to last week. Every day he's been taking a little less formula and staying on the boob a little bit longer. Today we supplemented about 5-6 oz which means he's getting quite a lot of breast milk from me! Which makes me really happy. (Even with nursing, he would take 21 oz of formula in the past!!!)

One majour change this week was being more patient. AmyG mentionned that it takes 20 minutes for our LOs (and us) to truly feel full/satisfied. So I've taken it slower with Sky. He's pretty distractable and instead of giving up and offering the bottle early, I'll let him look around, smile at me, and come back to the breast when he's ready.

Another thing that has helped this week is a constant breast massage/compression like action (I've been kind of doing it my own way) when he's nursing. He'll stay on longer when I do this.

This was the first week of me trying "Mother's Nursing Tea" that has fennel, fenugreek, blessed thistle, milk thistle, goat's rue, marshmallow root and a couple other ingredients. Maybe this has been helping, too!?

Also, I've been getting more sleep. I go to bed within an hour of LO going to bed every night and every morning I catch his first morning nap.

Since cutting back on his supplement by an oz (that's offered at every nursing session) this week, he's still leaving "left-overs" - I'm so happy! And for two days in a row, he's left 1 whole bottle out of the five that we offer in the fridge! That's amazing for us!

I hope this momentum keeps! We're going to do one more day of 2 oz bottles and then switch to 1 1/2 oz bottles for a couple of days and see how he does. He had 2 days in a row this week when he pooped so I know he's getting my milk!

We can do it ladies! Some days are crappy and some days feel like you won the biggest marathon - at least we're doing all that we can for our LOs!
