Flamers I have a snack for you

So I thought of a good flame worthy topic last night after I logged off.

We're not going to raise DS to believe in Santa. He'll know it's a Christmas story like Rudolph and such but he won't believe that's where his presents come from. Or I should say we're not going to go out of our way to pretend Santa ate the cookies or something.

We'll enjoy the Santa story and all. We're even going to breakfast with Santa in December so we can get a good pic with DS. I play along with my neices, even the older ones and say things like 'Did Santa visit you?' etc.

I just don't see it as all that big of a deal, and DH was raised without Santa.

Now that I read this I don't think it's flame worthy enough for you. Let's try this instead:

Santa is the devil! I would never LIE to my children like that and instill such mistrust. I will pray for you all and feel sorry for your children!!!

Is that better?

  • I don't think anyone has ever been traumatized by being indulged in a fun, silly holiday tradition.  However, if that is what you want to do, go for it.
  • Hee. My MIL thinks I had a horrible upbringing bc I never believed in Santa - my fam's pretty cynical and I have older sisters who told me what's up. I was still stoked for xmas every year.

DH is sort of on the "let's have them believe in Santa!" train, but I'm taking an don't ask/don't tell policy if he does it. I want nothing to do with the lies... :P

  • Eh, not totally flame-worthy.  I do know many people that do that.  But I want to play up the fantasy and excitement with my kid.  She will not turn into a crack-head ax-murderer b/c she finds out one day that Santa is not real.
  • Uh, I'm not raising DD to believe in Santa. I plan on telling her at very early age that Santa is not real.

Why is that flame-worthy? Is that akin to smacking your child??

Yeah - after last night, you have to do better than this!  LOL

  • It's a personal choice.  I always loved believing in Santa...even when I was older and KNEW he wasn't real.  It's just plain fun.  To each their own!

  • Dang, I totally thought some people with flip over this. I am a failure as a fire starter. Tongue Tied

I don't see anything flame worthy about it, but there are some high strung people around sometimes who could turn anything into a bonfire.

  • I understand the rationale of trust and lies. However, I think it's a little sad that goes hand in hand with a lack of magic. I don't remember how old I was when I realized that Santa wasn't a real person. I do know that no one "told" me, that it was something I came to on my own. And I know I was under 8. But my disappointment was tempered by making Christmas special for my sisters and brothers.

I think the belief in things that make you stand in awe, whether it is a virgin birth, a miraculously burning lamp, or flying reindeer, is the gift of the season.

Oh, and the "devil" thing? Please...if teaching my kid about Satan Claws, sorry, Santa Claus is what I'm going to hell for, God hasn't been paying very close attention.

  • Whats more flame worthy is that you are trying to start flames.  Seriously.

Santa/no Santa--no biggie.  Do what you think is best.

Nah, had I been serious about trying to start flames I would have come on here pretending to have one headstrong opinion and flamed everyone who didn't agree 100% with me.

so true.  Or just bring up ear piercing or Babywise.  Haha.

  • DH and I also decided we wont tell fake stories about Santa or the Easter bunny or any of those fictional characters bringing gifts, etc. I know the parents of other kids will hate us when DD is braking the news to them. I just hate that my 9 yr old nephew still thinks santa is real. I say, thank ME!!

We will tell them stories and be clear they are fiction. Or maybe how the original situation got changed around and is now fictional.

  • I'm a member of the Elves Sepratist Party and I can tell you very much that Santa is real.  He is a totalitarian autocrat and slave driver who beats the poor elves into submission.

    Magic my pointy ass.

  • Huh.  We're doing the same.  The magic will be the Christmas tree, the cookies (not organic- yaay!), the songs and decorations.  I have 2 thoughts.  I had nightmares for 2 years when I realized ANYONE could get a ladder, climb my roof and then shimmy down the chimney/ .  If I woke in the middle of the night I would sneak down and if a fire wasn't burning scream for HOURS until my parents started a fire so bad guys couldn't come in.  Secondly, as computer savvy as kids are nowadays, it would suck to have my 4 y.o. come to me- "mom, I googled Santa.  I have some bad news-"  Ha.  FWIW, I got flamed BIG time on 0-6 last year for this.

Now THAT is some funny stuff!

You couldn't have told me when I was little that Santa wasn't real - I know that I saw him outside my window when I was like 8. Imagine my surprise when I found out the truth! Anyway, my husband wants to go with this particular tradition and I don't really have an opinion either way.

What is most important to me is that my daughter knows the true meaning of Christmas and doesn't become some over-indulged, materialistic twit.

LOL, Eeyore, that was my point last night. Every stupid thing is flame worthy on 0-6. This board is like the anti-0-6 board, nothing gets people riled up.

I actually enjoy this board because of that. It seems more people here understand that it's your job as a parent to make the right decision for your family, and they understand that others may make different decisions.

  • Okay... Let me try to brew something up for the flamers... BRB...
  • We're totally doing the Santa thing in our house, but won't be doing the Jesus thing.  I think you have a right to do what you want, but I don't see the harm in believing.  I had a student who "didn't believe in Santa and all that other stuff" AND didn't celebrate Halloween.  It was kind of sad to not see her get into all of the excitement of the holidays with the other kids.

    LOL!!!!

And I don't think he was even born at the North Pole. Is he even eligible to be autocrat? And I've heard he's Jewish! He doesn't even celebrate Christmas! What's up with that?

I'm sorry. I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to appreciate sarcasm and irony.

  • And wth Brahim? I was picking up on your own joke, which I thought was hysterical, btw.
  • I feel bad for all your children if you don't let them believe in Santa and be kids....just my opinion.
