For a child support hearing?
I don't know my date of my hearing yet, but having a lawyer would really calm me down. I know they base the amount on certain factors and use a standard calculator, but I would really like to have someone there to be my legal advocate. I'll definitly hire someone if my ex decides he wants visitation or wants to petition for custody, but I'm really not sure about child support.
WWYD?
In my professional network I have multiple contacts for lawyers. I wouldn't have an issue finding one who specializes in this sort of thing.
Re: Would you retain a lawyer?
If you can afford it, yes. I could not. I know that after child support is settled he will come after me with a lawyer for visitation/custody and I will need a lawyer then.
My caseworker has made me feel very at ease and that he is working for me. So I do not have a lawyer.
But I would not be suprised if he shows up with a lawyer for our second court date tuesday.
This. Except for the actual divorce. I've done it all myself. I've been my own advocate for the initial CS and each modification after, every time I've had to go to court b/c DB refused to pay CS. I've Been the one to write my own letters to the enforcement officer and to My state senator to get things moving again when DB was at his highest arrears balance of close to 15K.
The information is out there to arm yourself with and especially the first one you really have very little to say. As the modifier said to DB when she set CS, "the numbers don't lie you pay what you owe that's that there is no negociation."
