step away from the scale... (a weight rant)

So... really haven't been weighing myself much because everytime I did it was like 8lbs of weight gain. Hopped on this AM and am truly HORRIFIED. I don't really even care if you all know- 200.2 f***in lbs. I have always been in the overweight category. My goal pg weight gain for myself was 205lbs, with a max of 210lbs. I am not even 23 weeks and I have now gained like 14lbs. There is no way I can only gain 10lbs over the next 17 weeks. Of course I weighed myself after a hefty serving of Fiber One mini-wheat thingys but still. This is way more than the dainty 8lbs I was oh so proud of. No wonder my lower back has been hurting. I have been doing the elliptical for 24min (length of one golden girl episode no commercials, lol) about 4-5 times a week in addition to 2 10 minute dog walks every day. I am hungry ALL the time. I am eating like 4 or 5 servings of fruit a day (this is my craving and I feel like it is better than candy). I try to keep treats (cookies or ice cream, etc) to once a day. I go to the doctor tomorrow and am going to ask her about it. We will see what my weight gain was over the past 4 weeks. I am sure all of the travel with fast food stops and staying at my grandparents last weekend with cake, cookies, etc didn't help things. Sigh. Maybe I should start doing 2 episodes of golden girls some of the days and have treat day only every other day. Definately have been bad on the vegetables... could definately work on that. Sorry for the rant. I know gaining weight is a part of pregnancy. I just don't want to gain an unhealthy amount. Embarrassed

  • Oh sweetie, dont beat youself up. I know I fluctuate a lot on the scales (like up or down 4 lbs in a days time). My OB said its really normal from water weight, etc. If your doctor isnt concerned then I would try not to be. No matter what the scale says, all the matter is your baby is healthy.

  • I don't think you are gaining so much it is unhealthy!  I have gained at 13lbs and my OB wasn't concerned at all.  There is also the possibility that you won't gain as much in the back half of your pregnancy!
  • Sorry you feel like you are gaining faster than you should.  I would say to cut back on the fruit.  Its loaded with sugar and while its better than candy because it has vitamins and nutrients, it will make you gain weight if you eat enough of it.  Try to work more protein in your diet.  If you are really worried about the speed you are gaining I think it can be a sign of GD so maybe call your OB and see if they want to test you a couple of weeks early.

Maybe add 10 min to your elliptical time.  In order to get decent fat burning/calorie burning time you need to get your HR up (to a safe level for pregnancy) for at least 20 minutes.  With 10 min warm up that's at least a 30 min workout time.  Good luck!

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Don't be too hard on yourself.  The extra weight could totally be water weight or ummm pooh. It happens.

Everyone gains differently.  Your body will do what it thinks it needs to do.  You are not necessarily gaining extra fat but baby necessities.

The good thing is that you are into exercise and after you give birth all that elliptical-ling will help bring off the weight.

If you are really worried ask your doc and get checked for GD.

  • I agree with everyone else.  14 lbs. isn't bad.  I'd slow down on the fruits too.  Replace it with some protein.  That will definitely help!
  • One thing to be cautious about is exactly how many calories of what type you're putting into your body... my H is on a low saturated fats diet for his heart, and when he went on it, I was kind of embarrassed as to how many calories I was actually eating.  Specialty 'creamers', for instance, are almost equivalent to drinking an entire can of coke for each cup of coffee, and since I was drinking 3+ cups of coffee a day at the time, I was drinking myself into an extra pound every other week.  There are a lot of hidden offenders like that... and a lot of 'healthy' things are still just as calorie-laden.

If you're truly concerned about it (and really, 14 lbs at this point is well within 'normal') ask your obgyn to refer you to a nutritionist.  They'll help you with meal plans, and help you decide which changes will be easy and safe for you to make during pregnancy.

  • Thanks ladies. Made me feel a lot better. I am going to try having some cut up veggies around and work more veggies in to snacks and meals for sure. My one hour GTT is tomorrow so we will see how that goes. I guess the reason I wasn't worried was when I buy maternity clothes they are lg/xl or 14/16 depending on brand and style and this is what I wore prior to pg as well. My face doesn't look fat. It seems to be boobs, belly, some thighs and Dh pointed out some booty which is also why I wasn't too concerned. My family tells me I look great but they are family so who knows if they are just being nice. I think I will work some of these suggestions in but try not to worry too too much. It is hard when you have worked really hard in the past to lose weight to see the numbers go up.
  • Don't feel so bad. I think the important part is that you are remaining active and have not gained an absurd amount of weight. And BTW, I love that you work out to the Golden Girls. That's my workout routine too. I watch an episode of the GG's on the treadmill and then watch half an episode while doing strength training, LOL.
  • I totally know its hard to watch the numbers rise!! Just try to remember that gaining weight is totally natural and normal and 14 lbs is definitely not over the top as far as weight gain goes.

I agree with the PPs as far as cutting back a bit on the fruit because of the high amounts of sugar. Adding high protein foods into your diet will help too. Baby needs LOTS of protein right now!!  I applaud you for staying active! Keep it up!

  • Try not to feel bad and just focus on eating the good stuff whenever possible. And honey, repeat after me, "I will never weigh myself after eating! Weigh INS should be done first thing in the morning, after peeing, with minimal clothing!" that's my motto!
  • I agree with everyone - 14lbs isn't as horrifying as it sounds.  I only say this because my doctor was so jubilant over my (what I thought was hefty) 12lb gain at 21 weeks.  He told me it was (quote) "FANTASTIC".  And it's not like I was even close to underweight to begin with.

Weight gain has been my biggest source of depression lately too.  I know how you feel, I really do.
