Low lying placenta, anyone?

I had my 20 week appt last week, and our precious baby girl was healthy and happy.  My doctor's office called me 2 days later and told me that I have a "low lying placenta" and "don't worry about it, but we will have to check it again via ultrasound at 32 weeks".  I was super upset when I got off the phone, simply because it sounded scary (even though they assured me that it was nothing to worry about right now).  I googled it and got a little more info on it, and then I felt better.  It sounds like A.) the placenta could move upwards and everything could be fine. B.) I might need a C section, but could otherwise be fine. or C.) I could start bleeding towards the end of my pregnancy and end up on bedrest. (yikes)  Does anyone else have this condition?

  • I don't, but I just wanted to say that I did hear that it almost always moves up. I hope it does so in your case. I know its hard not to be concerned but this issue does usually correct itself.Good luck!

  • i do....i was on bedrest for 3 weeks from weeks 15-18 for it (had some slight bleeding..nothing major).  if they aren't worried, you shouldn't be.  but i'd limit any lifting or hard work until you know for sure that placenta has moved.

  • My placenta is low as well.  They are going to re-scan at 23 weeks, and if it is still low my OB said then we will start discussing c-sections.  However, he said they normally move up!
  • I found out I have this at 13 weeks. I had my anatomy u/s at 18 weeks, they said it hadn't moved, but not to be concerned. They compared it to a balloon, if you're to put a dot on it and blow it up, the dot will move. I read more about it online, and I guess it's a pretty common situation, and that in most situations it does move. The doctor hasn't even discussed having another ultrasound, c-section, or what would happen if the placenta does not move yet because he's confident that everything will be fine.
  • I found out at my 20 week ultrasound that mine is low. The doc wants me to have another ultrasound at 28 weeks. I purposely didn't look it up (ignorance is bliss!) because I don't want to worry about something I don't need to. So, I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it! He said it usually moves up so I'm hoping it does!
  • I do, I have an ultrasound next week to check on it and see if it's moved any. I'm not too concerned right now since there is a good chance it will move up.

  • I do - placenta is partially covering my cervix.  I have another u/s at 26 weeks to see if it's moved up.  Doctor said not to worry as it is highly likely to move as the baby and uterus grow.
  • ***raises hand*** I do.  My doctor seemed completely unconcerned, so I'm not going to stress out about it until she does!  I've got enough stress on my plate with hubby deployed!  She told me odds are it will move up, but we'll check again at 28 weeks and she'll have a better idea of what the situation is then, and how she'll handle it.

Try and relax :)  Easier said than done, I know!  But, your doctor knows best -- if he/she isn't worried about it, I would totally not even worry about it!  They'll let you know if there's a problem!

  • I had one when I had my us at 19 weeks. I had another us for another problem 2 weeks later and no longer have a low lying placenta. I am sure yours will adjust too!
  • I had my anatomy scan at 17w 3d, and today at 22w 2d my doc told me that I have low lying placenta. I didn't know about that 3rd one... my doctor doesn't seem worried, just said we'll check it out again on another u/s later. The bed rest thing scares me though - I graduate December 11, I can't really be put on bed rest... haha.

  • Add me to the list.  Had the u/s on Thursday and when I saw the doctor after that he mentioned it was low lying.  He isn't concerned.  More baby pictures at 32 weeks to see if it's moved and another peak at little one.  All in all I have already had 1 c/s if it doesn't move I guess another one wouldn't be so bad...just not really what I wanted but a healthy safe baby and mama is more important.  GL to everyone let's hope all these placentas move!
  • I was diagnosed with that at last month's appointment, so I was on partial pelvic rest (no lifting, bending, etc). At last week's appointment, I was given the all clear because the placenta moved up.

Stay positive because in most cases it resolves itself.

Ditto exactly. Well, I cheated SLIGHTLY on the googling, but not really worrying about it till the next scan.

  • I have marginal placenta previa....  I've been on bed rest for 8 weeks and I have at least 8 more weeks to go.  I had a bleeding scare 8 weeks ago and bled for 7 weeks (not fun).  We are going to check again at 28 weeks and depending on my placenta and other things she will let me off bed rest.

I think as long as you don't have any bleeding you should be ok and like all of the girls have said they normally move!  I am praying mine moves, this is baby #3 and would be my first c-section.
