Re: names that make you cringe

  • "Action" names, like Chase and Tripp.

Names like Precious/Preshus, Mircale/Myrakle, Special, Treasure (I've taught girls with all of these names)..

Traditional or classic name spelled in a "unique" way, like Jezzyka and Kennedi.

  • K names generally make me twitch, which suck because there are some good K names out there. The flood of cre8ively spelled or made up ones have ruined this letter for me. I try not to put my K disclaimer on appropriate posts, and I will always love Katherine and Kate, but yeah..most K names just aren't going to work for me anymore.

And I've actually seen so many butcherings of the name Aidan, that I'm slowly coming around to the original.

  • Heaven, Serenity, Precious, etc...it makes it even worse when paired with a MN like Faith, Joy, Hope, Grace, etc. (I like these names, just not paired with other "motivational" names)

Aw, you're cutting out all of the fun! Wink

Here are some of my least faves...

~ Braylin (I guess that's the Y craze again, though) for a girl (or Braylon for a boy, for that matter).

~ Most name from the Twilight craze--crazes in general annoy me when it comes to names, actually.

~ Trendy girl names like Peyton, Addison, Madison, McKenzie, Parker, Dylan... and anytime there's a question of boy or girl, I think it's a bad idea to use the name for a girl...

I'm just not about trends at all, when you get right down to it. I like classic, traditional names...

  • Man, everytime I see my own name on these lists (MacKenzie) I get a little upset, but then I realize, it was NOT trendy in 1983. It's still the suck when you go to a store and you constantly think someone is yelling your name, only to realize that no, it's a 4 year old girl they're yelling at.

Totally agree about loving the old lady names! Classics are always amazing, in my opinion. To be honest, my little girl's name would've been Mabel Fiona if my husband didn't hate Mabel so much :P

  • Place names that were not people names before they were places. (Example: Charlotte was a person name first. Savannah was not.) Also, I just simply cannot stand Hailey/Bailey/Kaleigh, Aidan/Jaden/Brayden, etc. And names like Ross and Dean. They're just boring. They make my ears want to take a nap. And any name with an X- Xander, Xavier, Jaxon, Paxton, Maddox. Gross.

  • Pretty much any name that starts with a K I think looks trendy and is usually a misspelling. Kylie, Kaylee, Kiera, Kyra, Katelyn

Anything with a 'y' in the middle-even if it's supposed to be there. Hate hate hate: Brooklyn, Landyn, Kadyn, Kadynce, Jadyn, Camdyn, Camrynn.

    Nicknames as first names.

Names that sound like they're forever a toddler name

    The names Brinley and Ryland.

  • I really, really hate "Kay" names: Kayla, Katelyn, Kaylee, Kaylan, Katie.

    Names with useless apostrophies: M'nijah

Names with pointless capital letters: CharLeigh

And names with random letters just thrown in: Caeden (which I hate, but that's off limits)

  • I hate people that follow celebrity crazy names! After that one person (whoever she was) named her kid Apple we had a mother tour our daycare and she was naming her baby Pear. Worst part was she was keeping the sex a surprise until it was born, but still naming it Pear regardless!

I don't like "adult" names for babies either. The biggest ones that get me is Harry, Henry and Tod. *cringe* They're even ugly adult names...

Oooohhh, yesss. Big no-no. I have an infant named Genevieve. Her parents call her GiGi for short. We only call her GiGi at school so now when she hears the name Genevieve she doesn't respond. I don't blame her. I wouldn't look at my parents if they named me that either...

  • My best friend is getting married in 2 years. Her & her FI have already decided on a boy name that they like....Braydon....ick....how she will spell it, I'm unsure. I've been trying to come up with some other more classic boy names that start with B that she may want to use.

You do realize that people are teens/adults for about 80% of their life. A heck of a lot longer than they are "babies."

One of my critiques when it comes to name our children is that I have to be able to think of them as a 50 yr old with that name.

If we have a girl her name will be Evelyn Grace. I fell in love with the name only to find out weeks late that was my greatx3 grandmother's name so I took it as a sign.

I love older names or "adult" names.

  • Inez is my least favorite legitimate name. It literally does make me cringe.

Kinsley or any variation of this is my least favorite made up name.

Also, I can't stand any and all "footnote names". For example:

    "JustMax"

    "Wendi with an I"

    "Morgan... for a girl"

"Isabella. It's okay because my mom liked it before it was popular."

  • Car names: Bentley, Lincoln, etc.

Addison/Adelyn (and all of their insane spellings)

The new wave of Grayson spin offs.

Any girl name made up by adding -lyn to the end of a perfectly normal name.

  • In addition to misspelled/made up names and those that randomly swap Ks in place of Cs and Ys in place of Is, and general "stripper" type names (Destiny and the like) the two that I specifically really, really dislike are Brody and Brock.  They scream meathead jock to me.  I just don't like the way they sound.

But if you named your kid those, don't feel too bad and take my opinion with a grain of salt because I named my daughter an old lady name (Eloise) and we call her Ellie (the horror!), my son has a dog's name (Max), my husband has a "old west, buckaroo" name (Wyatt) and I have an outdated 80s name (Michelle).  Stick out tongue  Different strokes for different folks!  But I do like the variety on this board and seeing the different tastes and opinions.

  • I hate the trend of names ending in the "-en" sound.

Hayden, Landon, Holden, Easton, Weston, Aiden, Jayden, Ethan, Jordan, Logan, Brayden, Carson, Colton . . .

Exactly! Would you rather have your kid have a cutie name and grow up with it. I'd rather have an adult name that the child will grow into then name them something trendy and cute as a baby.  I can't imagine half the names out there now on a resume when these kids get older!

  • There are plenty of names that I don't like or I think are overused or boring, but the worst ones I've personally come across are:

Cutler (all I think of is knives)
    Tarson (?)

Unique (she wasn't "unique" enough as an individual?)
