Hi everyone!! Wanted to give everyone some information that they may or may not already have, and since I'm just now starting to write in the board I'd thought I'd share some of my wisdom (I've been a lurker for awhile
)
I know lots of you are going to be breastfeeding and will be buying a breast pump as well. I work for a health insurance company and most pregnant women I talk to aren't aware that their health insurance company will cover part or all of their breast pump (depending on their benefits) if they purchase the pump through a medical supply company. For instance my coverage covered the pump at 80% after my deductible was met (which it is). I was able to get the Medela Freestyle (they also have a few others including the Medela Pump in Style) through a company called PMSI. So I paid $60 for a pump that would have cost me $340 at Target.
Not all health insurance companies do this and some only do it if medically necessary, but many more companies will cover it for any circumstance (like just needing the convience of a breast pump.) It is definetely worth the 10 minute phone call to find out if its covered.
**Also if they do cover it ask them which supply house in your area it will be covered through. AND how early you can get it, the insurance company I work for allows mom's to buy it before the birth but some may not. Thats important also for us January moms because if you've met your 2010 medical deductible it means the insurance will pay its portion, if you wait until January 2011 most likely you're deductible will be reset and they won't make a payment on the pump.
If you have a question let me know!
