Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Shoes for 9 Month Old?

The LO has some crib shoes but she's almost always barefoot.  It's been summer and the shoes would always come off at daycare so I just gave up on them.

Now she's standing up and starting to take a few steps so I think I might need to start putting shoes on her for daycare.

What's a good shoe for a nine month who is close to taking her first steps?

  • I just barely started putting shoes on DD and it's usually when we go out and I know letting her crawl and "walk" will happen and I want to protect her feet.  Aside from that I let her go barefoot because I've read that walking barefoot is the best way for your child to learn to walk.  It helps them to feel the different textures of the floor and learn to adjust.

  • We rarely use shoes unless DD is walking outside.  We have trees in the yard so I don't want her stepping on sticks, so we put soft shoes like pedipeds on her.  I found some really cute ones at payless.  Once we are going outside more often (it's just too dang hot now) I'll invest in some nice shoes from stride rite to fit her chubby wide feet.  Inside though she is just barefoot.
  • This is funny because we went to the Stride Rite outlet yesterday to buy shoes. As of yesterday, DS wasn't walking (today, he decided to take several first steps!). The sales person talked us out of buying a pair of shoes. He said we should wait until he is walking (really walking) and that he has a need for shoes such as walking outside.

Of course, when DS took several solo steps today I had to laugh. I told my DH that sales guy lost a sale. (But I'm ok with it because the soft sole selection wasn't so hot either).

  • We use Robees or the Target knock-off brand, I think they call them Ministar or something like that.  They are TONS cheaper than Robees and do exactly the same thing.

  • The Robeez are great for comfort and staying on the feet. Our only problem with them is that ds wants to eat them!
