Shower Etiquette

So, my aunt-in-law wants to throw us a shower! Yay! However, due to the holidays, wants to wait till mid-january... :(

This part makes me kind of nervous. People keep saying to save stuff for your shower and all that stuff.  But waiting till i'm 8.5 months pregnant to go out and buy stuff that i didn't get... A)leaves me with possibly a big bill right before baby comes and B)leaves me, the planner type, very nervous about not having everything ready.

But how do I handle it? This is where I turn to you ladies! Do I say something about wanting it before the holidays instead? Or do I suck it up and just be grateful someone wants to throw me one? The more I think about it, the more I want to just suck it up so that I don't come off as ungrateful and rude, but I don't know :(

So WWYD?

Re: Shower Etiquette

  • I think having a shower 2-3 weeks before your EDD is cutting it a little close. Not only because you'll be well into your "I'm uncomfortable" phase, but there is also the chance that you could already have the baby by then if you go a couple weeks early.

If it were me, I would find a way to tell your aunt these reasons in a nice way. I had my shower when I was 33 weeks last time.

  • This would make me nervous, too!! Could you suggest doing it in late October or very early November? This is well before holidays, and generally people are broke after Christmas- not as "gifty".  Throwing it that late risks not having a shower at all. LOTS of things could not go as well as planned,  and I am sure she would understand!
  • I would tell her you'd like to do it while you're still comfortable to move around, and before the holidays -- because what if baby comes early?  My sister went at 37 weeks... right when you'd be having your shower!  She should understand - see if she'll do it the first weekend in November - before the holidays and while you're still feeling decent :)  GL!

  • I'd tell your aunt that your OB advised you to schedule things for before you're 37 weeks, since at that point you could go into labor anytime. I think it makes it easier when you can attribute it to "doctor's orders". Then maybe just ask her politely, "do you think it would be possible to plan it for early November instead? If you think things will be too hectic, I completely understand... I just wouldn't want you to go through all the work of planning a shower and then not be able to have it!"

Or something along those lines. Good luck!

  • Yikes, that is cutting it really close.  If you can't get her to move up the date, I would recommend buying the things you'll *need* ahead of time, and leaving the nice to have and like to have things for the shower.  That way, if baby comes early, you won't have to worry about running out to get the things you'll need.  I hope it works out!

  • o good.. i'm not the only one who thinks it is cutting it close! ::whew!:: Now that I have some people backing me up then I'll just see if it's possible to do it sooner.  Thanks ladies!

  • definitely say something like, "that sounds wonderful, but i'd definitely rather have it before the holidays so i have time to organize everything before baby gets here." she'll understand. and if she doesn't, insist. it's your life. your baby.
  • Ah, that would make me very nervous.  They are having mine at 30 weeks, same as we did my sisters.  My sister ended up having my niece very early so luckily we did it at 30 weeks and by 8.5 months along your gonna be exhausted and not wanting to have to run around for last minute things.
