CDing Girls

I've been thinking lately about switching to cloth diapers and I have some questions.  I haven't spoken to DH about this yet, but I know he's going to want to know the answers to some of these before we make a decision.  What brand do you use and how do you like them?  How many do you have?  Are these easy to wash and get clean?  Where did you purchase them?

 Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: CDing Girls

  • I don't CD yet but I highly recommend looking into a cloth diaper Try-It package.  I believe Kelly's Closet has one.  Every baby is different and diapers that work for one may not work for the next, so it's best to try them out first before you commit to one brand (just like disposables).  These trial kits let you try them for a certain amount and days and send back the ones that don't work and keep the ones that do.  Then you can invest in the ones that do without wasting money!

  • Ditto Jaye.  Jillian's Drawers has one too.

    But to answer your questions:

I use prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers.  I like them.  They are easy and I use the covers as part of her outfit so I don't have to change the cover everytime she needs a diaper change..

I buy 24 prefolds in each size.  I only have 6 (I think) covers.  I have spent $150 in diapers and supplies so far.  Each time she out grows a prefold size, I have to order the next size it costs about $50.

They are easy to wash.  I throw them in the washer with a little bit of detergent and wash.  Then I was again with a bit more detergent and a Tide Free Stain Remover thing. Then do an extra rinse.  Then dry.  Any left over staining is sunned out, unless it isn't sunny outside.

I bought them from www.greenmountaindiapers.com.  I prefer the Thirsties Duo covers over the bummis covers that I have.  But I haven't tried anything else.

  • I have bumGenius & Fuzzibunz one-size pocket diapers.  The bumGenius fit DS better, but I like the snaps of the Fuzzibunz.  I just bought a couple of bGs with snaps that should be in soon and I think those are going to be my favorites.  Velcro is easier but I've only been using these diapers for just over a month and the velcro is already starting to look rough, but the fuzzibunz snap diapers still look brand new.  I have about 20 diapers right now & I wash every other day, sometimes every day and a half.  I think 25-30 diapers would probably be perfect.  I also had some Thirsties Duo diapers that i loved in size 1 but DS already outgrew them.  I'm going to buy some size 2s after I sell his NB diapers.

CDs are so much easier to wash than I expected.  I breastfeed, so I don't have to rinse them yet.  (Breastfed poop is water soluble, so you can just throw them in the wash.  If you formula feed or when you start solids you have to scrape/rinse the poo out before you wash.)  I have a kitchen trash can next to my dresser/changing table.  I have two pail liners (Wahmies brand) that go in it.  When it's time to wash, I just take the liner and all and throw it in the washer, then put the other clean liner in the trash can.  I start with a cold rinse, then hot wash with a scoop of detergent (Rockin Green) and then another cold rinse.  Then I either hang everything or if I'm in a hurry because I'm running out of diapers I put the inserts in the dryer and hang the outer pul part of the diaper.  I used to put those in the dryer too but I think that's why my velcro got so rough, so now I always line dry them.  No stains or anything yet, probably because I line dry them so the sun bleaches out any stains.

I've bought diapers from kellyscloset.com, jilliansdrawers, com, and diaperswappers.com (used).  There are a lot of other sites that sell cloth, too.  You can usually always find a sale somewhere.

  • OK, so I'm still using newborn diapers so I'm not going to be a huge help to you.  I am using KL0 which are fitteds with a cover (I used Thirsties Duo covers).  I have 25 diapers and 5 covers.  I wash diapers every 2-3 days. When Phoebe outgrows them I am going to be using a trial from Kellys closet.  I bought my covers and accessories from there and they were wonderful!  I rented my KL0's from Nellys Natural baby and I didn't have a very good experience so I wouldn't recommend them.  I do like the trials that come from Kelly's because you can pick and choose what you want to try as opposed to Jillians Drawers that has a set trial that they send you.  I knew there were things that I wasn't interested in trying so I didn't want to bother with them.  I am going to try Bum Genius 4.0, Fuzzibunz, and a few other things that I can't think of off the top of my head. I'm mostly going to be using all in ones and pockets.

Washing is really easy.  I have a HE machine and I still don't have any problems.  I do a cold rinse then a wash in hot with a little detergent (I use regular Tide HE) and I do 2 rinses on the end.  One wasn't enough with my machine to get all the soap out and if I used less soap they didn't come as clean.  Its really trial and error to figure out what works best for you.

I want to mention that I LOVE cloth diapers and I was the first person to think people had lost their minds when they said they were going to cloth diaper.  Every single time I have used a sposie I have had a blow out and her poor skin gets so red in them and peels.  I don't have any of those problems with my cloth.

  • I did the jillians drawers trial. We use mostly Bum Genius and Fuzzibuns as well, with a few Blueberries, happy heinie, thirsties, and maybe some others mixed in. My personal favorite are fuzzibuns but DH doesn't like snaps so he prefers the bum genius. They work great - I never have blowouts, although sometimes other people are hesitant to make the snaps tight enough, so they will leak then. We probably have 30 and that is more than enough to do wash every other day. I use charlies soap and do a "quick wash" cycle on cold with a tiny amount of detergent, then a regular wash cycle on hot with a full scoop and an extra rinse. I have a little poo staining and a little from rash cream, but I haven't tried sunning. You do have to be careful what kind of rash cream you use and I am switching. I got mine from jillians drawers, abbys lane, kelly's closet, amazon, and the swap spot board on here. Also a few from craigslist. Sometimes you can get good deals on barely used diapers because either they quit CDing or that particular diaper didn't fit their child well. Good luck!
