DH's family is planning a trip to Hawaii for next summer and I'm having a hard time envisioning life with a one year old. What's a "typical" day like? How much will he be sleeping?
Seems hard for me to figure out what our priorities for a place will be, since I don't know what our life will be like. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Re: Life with a 1 year old
One year is a big time of transition from what I can tell. DD is cutting back on milk, changing her napping schedule, and pretty unpredictable most days. She sleeps between 14-15 hours total between night-time and her two naps. That being said, she is much more flexible now. We can push back a nap or a meal without huge meltdowns. We would be completely comfortable with a family vacation now. I mean it would mess up her "normal" schedule but we could rather easily get her back to a routine.
Wow...that doesn't make a whole lot of sense...but babies are confusing! I definitely would not miss out on Hawaii.
Thanks so much for the feedback! We certainly won't be skipping on the trip... that's for sure. I'm just trying to imagine what it will be like - certainly not like our last trip there!
Thanks! I'm hoping that since we are west coasters, jet lag won't be too too bad (only 3 hours). I'm also glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip at that age. We are thinking about another trip in Jan/Feb around when our LO will be your LOs age... good to know that you had fun.
DD sleeps 12 hours at night and takes 1-2 naps a day (about 2 hours). She is all over the place and wants to touch everything. She likes to eat everything too, I use baby goldfish or cheerios to keep her seated sometimes and that helps. She is also getting some molars and has been super clingy. Obviously all kids are different.
Funny... dd will be one in less than 2 weeks and we are leaving for Hawaii in 2 days!
She is awake alot more, only takes one nap a day, but for us it is pretty regular. She eats 3 meals a day and has 3 cups of milk a day and fortunatly is a pretty scheduled baby. One of our priorities was a 2 bedroom... she will NOT sleep if we are in the same room with her... she would want to play. I feel like we can do lots of things with her... we plan on hiking, shopping, swimming at the beach and jsut wandering all the little towns.
Im sure you will be fine and by the time its here you will have it all figured out. If I had bought the tickets at your los age I would have been much more nervous because the change is so great from then to now.
Mine is almost 1. He sleeps all through the night which is wonderful and takes 1-2 naps. Teething is a b!tch though so you might have to deal with that. Also, he is EVERYWHERE. Now that DS is walking, he has become a mr. big hot shot and walks everywhere. He finds things I never even knew existed in my home. He fights diaper changes, getting in the car seat, things like that. I've heard it's typical so be prepared.
Baby proofing has taken on a whole new meaning.
You will need a lot of toys, things for entertainment, snacks, all that. Also, be aware that milk in Hawaii is super expensive unless you're military.
Did I mention that I'm jealous bc you get to go?? I need a vacation!!!
This is a really good point. We were in a hotel and DS was supposed to be sleeping in his PNP but since we were up, he wanted to be up. He reached over the side, did everything he could to get out. It was really challenging.
No idea, but have a great time!! We're planning a cruise around DS' first birthday, so we'll see how that goes!
