Avent VS Dr. Browns

I am finishing up my registry and thought I could get some advice from some moms who have tried these two brands. I am wanting to breast feed, but I know that this does not always work out so I also want to be prepared. I am just wondering for those who have tried these brand which ones you liked. I like the nipple shape and bottle shape of the avent better, but Dr. Browns is supposed to outshine avent in gas/spit up prevention. Let me know what your opinions are. Thanks. : )

Re: Avent VS Dr. Browns

  • I would suggest registering for both - a starter set of each - like 2-3 bottles of the smaller sizes.  Your baby might prefer one type over the other.  We started with Dr. Brown's and they are working out great so far.

If you commit to one type over the other and get a ton of bottles of that brand but then your baby doesn't take to them, then you will have to start over with another type.

    This.

Just get a 3 pack of both on the small size and try both of them out and then buy more of the kind your baby likes. They're both great bottles but I do like Dr. Brown the best.

  • My DD has been using Avent since she was about 2 weeks old. But, last night I was given Dr. Brown's and thought they were wonderful. Until DD spit up literally all of the milk she had today. So now we are back to the Avents. I agree with the PP that said get a starter pack of each. They are both great bottles.

  • I EBF, but we use Avent for sitters and when I'm out and about.

I love them. They are the only thing she will take. She's never had gas issues with them.

  • Personally I like Dr. Browns.  We thought we would use Playtex drop ins (DS1 loved them) but DS2 was taking forever to eat from them.  We switched to Dr. Browns and have had a lot more success.

But I agree with PP's, buy a starter set and see what your LO takes to.

  • I would get some of both. We used the Avent ones for a while but DD would be super fussy about halfway through the bottle and couldn't finish. We switched to Dr. Brown's and haven't had a problem since.

  • Have you considered Born Free?  We tried Dr B, Avent, Tommy Tippee and Gerber so far and Born Free are the best.  Wish I didn't have over 250 dollars of other trials.  Many of the others leaked, Dr B made baby spit up terribly, etc... and I finally discovered Born Free and they work perfect for breastmilk.

  • I used Dr. Brown's with my 1st daughter and she has no problems with them.  My only complaint (minor) was that for some reason I couldn't shake up the bottle to mix the formula without it leaking all over.   I BF for about 5-6 weeks and supplemented with formula from birth.  This time I needed to buy new bottles b/c the Dr. Brown's I had weren't BPA free.  My sister used Avent recently with her daughter so I tried them.  I am again BFing and supplementing with formula and we haven't had any problems.
