Baby Names

In response...

to the post about the name Jovie I created.First off, I LOVE the suggestion by someone about naming her Josephine Violet, and Jovie as a nickname. LOVE!My question is this: DH likes the name Josephine, but likes the nn Josie instead of Jovie (if she did have a nn). I on the other hand *very* strongly dislike Josie. He is not completely sold on Josephine because he knows I will call her Jovie, and he isn't sold on it because: "It sounds very modern unlike Callahan, Julia and William". He doesn't understand it would be a nn!Do you guys feel it is too "modern" or it doesn't fit well?

Re: In response...

  • I absolutely loathed the name Jovie in that poll.

HOWEVER, I love the name Josephine (it was #1 on our list, but our son is named Jack and we are not Duggar's) and the name Violet and think Jovie would be a VERY cute nn for it.

He could just call her Jo or even Josie. My grandparents had a huge fight over my uncle's name back in the 50's. Grandpa wanted to name him Dennis after my grandma's brother, and Grandma wanted to name him Eric. So, they named him Dennis Eric. To this day, Grandma calls him Eric and only Eric. He was never confused and neither was anyone else, it was just the way it was. Our son is named John nn Jack but my FIL calls him John (named after FIL). No biggie!

  • So he doesn't like Jovie? Well, then I'd say it's out. You don't have to agree 100%, but if he dislikes it, maybe go back to the drawing board. I wouldn't want to name a baby something my DH really dislikes. If you absolutely dislikes Josie as a nickname I'd say Josephine might be a tough choice. It's a long name that people are likely to shorten unless you are adamant about her being called Josephine. And you never know - she may love the NN Josie. I have a hard time keeping names on our list with potential nicknames I dislike.

Also, I think Josephine matches very well with Julia and William. I think Callahan is "modern" and unique, while Julia, Josephine, and William are traditional.

  • Yay! That was my suggestion :) I think Josephine is right in line with Callahan, Julia and William! I don't think her nn should be considered when thinking of the sibset as a whole. Maybe continue calling her Jovie in the womb and I think eventually he'll get use to it. I think Jovie is super cute, especially with a solid given name such as Josephine.
