DS's diaper rash tmi

I feel like such a terrible mom that DS has this horrible diaper rash all over his butt. His butt is all red and has bits of poop that is stuck on him. I can't get it off!

I put some diaper cream but I don't think I did enough.

Can you girls please help with ideas? I am desperate.

TIA

  • I'm not sure I quite understand why you can't get the poop off...but maybe you can try some vaseline to sooth the skin and soften the poop to get it off without hurting him.  What about a wet washcloth, or a bath.

Also, terrible Mom award would go to me.  DD had horrible diaper rash, so I thought, on and off for 6 months last year.  Every time I thought to bring her to the Dr. it started to clear up.  But every time it started to clear up, it would last only a couple of days before getting worse again.  Finally after 6 mos I took her to the Dr.  It was exzema (sp?) and cleared up after 3-4 days with medicine.

  • Here are some things that have helped with DD has a rash:

-Letting her play/soak in a warm bathtub

-Letting her go naked for a bit to "air out"

-Using A&D ointment (the gold kind) at every diaper change until it clears up

If nothing seems to be working, I'd probably take him to the Ped.  He might have a yeast infection that will need a RX. Good luck and I hope something works! Poor little guy.  Don't beat yourself up about it.  You're doing the best you can, and these things happen.

  • I'm a pediatric derm PA...mix 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment (OTC) with Lotrimin cream (Clotrimazole) and apply 2x day...use a barrier with each diaper change like Zinc Oxide or Aquaphor. Don't use baby wipes...just warm water and a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVe soap. If' it doesn't get better in about a week, call your pedi for an Rx of Vusion...if that doesn't work, you may need to get an oral antifungal (Diflucan / fluconazole).

You may always want to consider using organic, dye-free (Chlorine free) diapers until it resolves as the chlorine in regular diapers might be irritating the rash more.
